7.62x51mm
From the Call of Duty Wiki
The 7.62x51mm (.308) NATO is a rifle cartridge developed in the 1940s and '50s as a standard for small arms among NATO countries. Specifications for the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge are not identical to the commercial .308 Winchester though they are safely interchangeable.Introduced in 1954 in the M14 and M60, it soon became the standard rifle cartridge of NATO countries through Standardized Agreement (STANAG). The cartridge was born by shortening the .30-06 round used in such weapons as the M1 Garand and BAR from 63 millimeters down to 51 millimeters. In the 60's, it was recognized that the 7.62x51mm's power was excessive in automatic fire, which lead to the adoption of the 5.56x45mm round in rifles and light machine guns. The 7.62x51mm is still in service today used by many countries around the world in general purpose/medium machine guns, sniper rifles and battle rifles.
