Bots (known as a short term for robots) are A.I. controlled players that appear in Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare , Call of Duty: Modern Warfare RemasteredCall of Duty: WWIICall of Duty: Black Ops 4, Call of Duty: Mobile, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare , Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War , Call of Duty: Vanguard and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. Bots appear in offline multiplayer or combat training online as well as online local or system link lobby. Bots have 5 different difficulties, those difficulties are Recruit, Regular, Hardened and Veteran, plus the "Mixed" difficulty.

They appear in both Multiplayer custom matches and Zombies matches in Black Ops 4.

Call of Duty: Black Ops[]

In Call of Duty: Black Ops, Bots first appeared in this game in a combat training lobby. They can be activated by going to the edit game options section and changing the number of friendly and hostile bots. In Recruit and Regular difficulty, Bots use weak tactics and never check what's behind them, but will aim for the head. In Hardened and Veteran mode, bots use all of their tactics and focus and checks who is behind them, and they can usually hear enemies' steps. Bots can use all kind of weapons and equipment, as well as even use the reviving ability included with Second Chance, but they won't equip one more attachment on their primary weapon when they are using Warlord. The bots have their clan tag set to [3arc], which is the clan tag used exclusively by Treyarch members.

The player can play the following game modes with bots:

  • Team Deathmatch
  • Hardcore Team Deathmatch (online only)
  • Free for all
  • Hardcore Free for all (online only)

Call of Duty: Black Ops II[]

Bots are back in Black Ops II and are smarter than they were on Black Ops. In II, the bots are smarter and are now able to capture objectives. They not only appear in offline multiplayer, but also appear online on Combat Training on both Boot Camp and Objective. If a player leaves a combat training lobby early, a bot will replace the role. When a new player is joining a session, one of the bots will leave and give room to the new player. They also have their clan tag set to [3arc], just like in Black Ops. Also, players can add bots in Custom Games now.

Bots randomly choose what they use in combat (except Peacekeeper), and are able to pick up weapons from the ground. Aircrafts (except Warthogs and Hunter Killer Drones, because they are fast) can be easily shot down by bots with lock-on rocket launchers like the SMAW and FHJ-18 AA, so some air scorestreaks such as UAVs and Stealth Helicopters are less effective when playing against them, however they don't attack aircrafts with guns. Veteran bots even often take down helicopters which are transferring Care Packages and A.G.R.s while other bots only do that sometimes. EMP is also not very powerful against bots, but it can take away the ability of using scorestreaks for a while.

On the other hand, ground scorestreaks are quite effective in this situation. No perk can counter them, and bots only use guns to damage them. So an A.G.R. can stay active much longer and kill more bots than a Stealth Helicopter which is a bit more expensive, also a team can have 2 A.G.R.s at the same time.

Tactical grenades are less effective against bots, they still can aim and shoot accurately when flashed or stunned, but they are still slowed down. Using smoke grenades isn't a good idea too, bots are able to see through smoke without problem. However, bots use tactical grenades (except EMP grenades) very often, but humans are the real victim as these grenades won't deal much damage to other bots.

For the lethal stuffs, the only thing bots don't use is Tomahawk. There is something special about bots: they use C4 as a claymore, their C4s automatically explode when an enemy is close enough. Bots always shoot enemy gadgets with guns if they find one.

When it comes to weapons attachments, bots can equip everything they want, but they can't use the grenade launcher and select fire if these are attached. Also bots can't switch the hybrid scope to ACOG mode, they use reflex mode all the time.

Humans are mostly the first target if a bot detects a group of enemies, this is very obvious when playing against Hardened of Veteran bots, forcing players to improve their skill and use more effective tactics. Also bots prefer to work in teams for better outcome and higher firepower. They will hip fire their weapons when enemies are close enough, their accuracy is pretty high, so bots can use sniper rifles or the Crossbow to kill enemies at close range even without aiming down sights.

Bots can customize their weapons with non-DLC camouflages (except Gold and Diamond) and reticles, they use pistol mastery calling cards. But they don't have custom emblems, their emblems are identical to the icon of their ranks.

Players can play these game modes with bots in custom games (changing game modes resets the bot settings):

There are a handful of game modes online where the player can play with bots:

  • Bootcamp: A game where teams of mixed humans and bots face each other on Team Deathmatch.  Bootcamp is available to players who are below Level 10; once they reach level 10 or higher they can no longer access this game mode. Players earn full XP from playing it.
  • Objective: A game of when any player of any level can play a different game mode besides team deathmatch, all game modes (expect for search and destroy and party games) can be randomly picked to play. Players will earn half XP.
  • Bot Stomp (Cancelled): A game where a team of humans verse against a team of bots in Team Deathmatch. Players do not earn XP in this game mode, but is a good way to learn strategy.

Call of Duty: Ghosts[]

In Call of Duty: Ghosts bots are now much smarter and they will play like a normal human player would in a Call of Duty game, using different tactics similar to actual players. They have the same four difficulties the bots have in Black Ops II but a new one called Mixed that randomly picks each bot a different difficulty. The player can now choose a bot difficulty for each bot team. The bots can also be noted to have a level based on their difficulty, i.e. a Recruit bot will be about level 1 - 10 and a Veteran one will be level 60.

When playing on PC, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One, the maximum number of bots that can be added is 17. When playing on a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, the maximum number of bots that can be added is 11.

Whenever an air killstreak is active (helicopter, helo scout, etc.). the bot will shoot at the helicopter in an attempt to destroy it.

Bots are also able to use all streaks, including map-exclusive streaks. Before they use a streak that leaves them vulnerable, they will find a safe spot and either crouch or prone whilst they use the streak.

Bots are supported in all game modes, and they don't have a clan tag.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare[]

Bots also appear in Advanced Warfare. They can appear with Supply Drop weapon variants, such as the Heavy Shield - Disruptor (Enlisted), the MK14 - Obituary (Professional), the AK-12 - R.I.P. (Elite), and the ASM1 - Magnitude (Marksman). Of course, they will have a small chance of using Retired weapon variants. They can also use all perks, equipment, scorestreaks, and even Exo movements. Like they were in Ghosts, they are supported in all game modes with only one party game mode Infected. The Mixed difficulty also returns. However, in Advanced Warfare, bots are now smart enough to pick up weapons on the ground, such as if they are only armed with a Combat Knife. Regular bots use Exo Abilities more than recruit bots, and hardened bots utilize dropshotting often.

When playing on PC, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One, the maximum number of bots that can be added is 17. When playing on a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, the maximum number of bots that can be added is 11.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III[]

Bots return in Call of Duty: Black Ops III. The bots are slightly smarter than they were in Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. In III, bots are now supported in all game modes, unlike in II, where they weren't able to play in Party Games or Search and Destroy.

When playing on PC, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One, the maximum number of bots that can be added is 17. When playing on a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, the maximum number of bots that can be added is 11.

Bots have 4 difficulties: Recruit, Regular, Hardened, and Veteran. The difficulties seems to control each bot's aggressiveness, weapons and speed. For example, Recruit bots are not aggressive, and their weapons are usually weak and don't cause a lot of damage and they won't run for a long period. Veteran bots are extremely aggressive, and the weapons they choose are more likely to have high damage and fire rate and they will run, and boost jump a lot. The bots can wall run, slide, boost jump, use specialists' abilities, and swim.

Unlike bots in previous games, bots in Black Ops III don't have any perks or attachments in their own loadouts unless they choose the default loadouts. Also they can't react to enemy scorestreaks, this means they are totally defenseless against streaks, although they still can use theirs. It can be very painful when enemy bots deploy many Counter-UAVs but friendly bots just don't care about it.

However, their ability of using guns is enhanced, being more accurate and faster than before. Also they can use specialists' weapons to increase their firepower. Bots are still deadly if players underestimate them.

Bots can customize the specialists' appearance but they can't customize their weapons. All bots use the same emblem and calling card, and their showcase weapon is the default KN-44 without modification.

Bots work fine when playing in custom maps that are downloaded from Steam Workshop.

In Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC versions, bots use the 3arc clan tag. In Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, bots use the ATVI clan tag.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare[]

Bots return in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. They can do everything the bots in Black Ops III can, and are much more aggressive. Mixed difficulty also returns.

The maximum number of bots that can be added is 6 per team for team based modes, and 11 for Free-For-All modes.

They don't suffer from the disadvantages which bots in Black Ops III have, most of time they can get their job done nicely.

Bots in this game have a special ability: they can use all weapons, including DLC weapons, but basic versions only.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered[]

Bots return in Private Matches of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, featuring the standard four difficulties (Recruit, Regular, Hardened and Veteran) as well as the Mixed difficulty. All game modes are possible with the bots, and they will complete the objectives as normal. They also feature abilities for area denial, usage of equipment, holding long sight lines with Sniper Rifles and reacting to Silenced and unsilenced shots. Bots also defend objectives, as well as react to objectives being captured. Also, they'll try to shoot down a helicopter using their gun if they don't have an RPG. Hardened and Veteran bots often dropshot, Recruit and Regular bots won't do so. All bots can throw back grenades, including Martyrdom grenades, so they can easily kill enemies with this. When an enemy is close enough to them, they will switch to pistols or fire from the hip.

The maximum number of bots that can be added is 17.

Bots with sniper rifles often 'camp' like real snipers, even in a Team Deathmatch, unlike others that are highly mobile. With other weapons, bots always use run and gun tactics, won't stay at one place for too long, but they stand still when throwing back grenades.

Bots' loadouts are determined by their difficulty level, with Veteran allowing bots to use every perk and weapon available. Bots use only 5 camouflages as well as the default (none), Desert, Woodland, Digital, Blue and Red Tiger. Their loadouts can be forcefully chosen using the inbuilt class restriction system, allowing the player to set bots to use Supply Drop items and camouflages other than the default five. Bots will also occasionally choose the default class, allowing the player to set the default classes to a specific loadout they wish to see a bot use if they choose the class. They always use the default knife to melee, even there is a melee weapon in their loadout. Due to the weapons and perks system of Modern Warfare Remastered is much simpler than other modern Call of Duty games, almost everything works fine for bots.

Bots' names are random first names without clan tag.

Bots also possess a unique ability to put Camouflages on the Commander Desert Eagle, the weapon that can't be customized. But if the host hasn't unlock that special Desert Eagle, bots won't use it.

Call of Duty: WWII[]

Bots make their return in Call of Duty: WWII and can be played offline on all game modes, including War.

The maximum number of bots that can be added is 17 (War mode however is capped at 11 bots). When playing splitscreen, no more than 10 bots can be added to a match.

Bots with sniper rifles and light machine guns will even 'camp' in one area of the map, presumably where they spawned and near objectives in game modes such as Domination.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4[]

Bots return in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. This time players have to add bots one by one in Custom Match. The bots don't have a clan tag.

The maximum amount of bots that can be added in Custom Games is 13 bots for Free-For-All modes, and, officially, 11 bots for team based modes (6v6). However, if one is to add all 13 bots to a Free-For-All mode and then switch to a team based mode, the extra 2 bots will remain effectively making the match 7v7.

Zombies[]

For the first time ever, Black Ops 4 has added the ability to add bots to play with in zombies offline and private matches. Players have the ability to add up anywhere from 1-3 bots during an in game session. bots will start off by using their starting weapons. They will also purchase weapons off the wall and rarely use the mystery box. If they are attacked by zombies in close encounters, they will knife the zombies. The player can also make them take mystery box weapons and pack a punched weapons. They also collect powerups like Max ammo and Bonus points but seem to actively avoid Nukes. They will also revive the player if they are downed by a Zombie. Bots will also purchase perks but will not seek out the perks and will only purchase them when nearby. Bots will always stay near the player though they will not use fast travel utilities.

Call of Duty: Mobile[]

In Call of Duty: Mobile, bots reappear in Practice vs. AI game mode, support only Frontline game mode in 6 maps. They can also be seen in normal Multiplayer and Battle Royale matches. The game uses bots as a placeholder for the players, so if an actual player is joining the match, the bot will leave it.

Bots aggressiveness in multiplayer is absolutely random. They can either walk past by enemy without even trying to notice them or they can instantly burst enemy to the head (noticeably often this happens with bots with AK117). Bots can use narrow amount of weapons: SMGs (such as PP19 Bizon, PDW-57, MSMC, RUS-79U and HG 40), ARs (LK24, BK57, M4 and AK117), LMGs (M4LMG and UL736), sniper rifles (DL Q33 and Arctic .50), KRM-262 shotgun and handguns (MW11, J358 and .50 GS). Bots can pull out a handgun if only they use a sniper as their primary and the enemy is close. Weapons they use has no attachments and has a specific Uncommon or Rare camouflage or even a Epic blueprint (Bizon, KRM-262 and M4LMG with blueprints has been seen so far). As of recent updates, bots can also use Legendary blueprint or even a Mythic blueprint (although this is rare). Even though most bots not seems to be a real threat, there is one type of them than can be completely dangerous: bots with KRM-262. They can flawlessly one-shot an enemy from a decent range. Bots can also use UAVs, throw frag grenades, capture the objective in Domination and Hardpoint, plant and defuse the bomb in Search and Destroy, revive an ally in Search and Rescue, and have random perks (they can also have Martyrdom), but they can't use Operator Skills and can't interact with any of them as well as scorestreaks.

All BR matches will be filled with bots. Most of the time they make up 80 to 90 percent of the entire lobby. Bots behavior in battle royale are completely different. They miss almost all of their shots. They can sometimes use their Sensor Dart. Bots can pickup weapons, armor, ammo and equipment only from ground loot. They can use armor plates when the armor is broken. They cannot use Kinetic Armor Overcharger unless this is the only plate they have. Bots movement is pretty much simple there: they can run, swim and rarely slide. While being shot bots can freeze in place for a moment and then trying to run away like nothing happened. When the next save zone is defined bots will always try to run towards new save zone if they're behind it. Bots also can't use vehicles and attack The Butcher.

Bots can have a random default, uncommon, rare or epic skin. They can also have a random backpack.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare[]

Bots return in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Difficulty seems to affect their weapons and aggressiveness. Recruit bots typically use guns without attachments and aren't so aggressive, Regular bots are moderately aggressive and use attachments, Hardened bots are very aggressive and use attachments all the time while Veteran bots are highly aggressive and always use attachments. Mixed difficulty also returns as well.

The maximum number of bots that can be added in Custom Games, officially, is 11. However, there are workarounds to allow for 10v10 bot matches. Using the 'My Modes' tab, one is able to select their own created Free-For-All mode, set the bots to 10 (or whatever number they want per side; 10 is max), then select a team based mode under the 'My Modes' tab. As long as the player does not touch the bot settings again, the number previously chosen will allow for that many bots per side, effectively allowing 10v10 it a bot match. Note that you must be signed in to Activision's servers for any saved custom game modes to show up.

This time, bots cannot use killstreaks, call in nukes or use field upgrades. Bots also do not use sprays or use underbarrel weapons such as the M203 or 12 Gauge Deputy. Although bots are able to perform finishing moves, it is rare.

Sometimes, bots might have the chance of using Operator Pack exclusive skins (Ex: a bot may use Otter's Crew Expendable skin). Veteran bots seem to utilize equipment very often, such as throwing knives, thermite, flashbangs, etc.

As bots cannot use field upgrades, they will not interact with team supporting field upgrades like the Munitions Box or the Weapon Crate, and also cannot interact with Care Packages, however they will destroy Recon Drones if one flies close enough. Bots can also destroy automated killstreaks such as Sentries, Support Helos, and UAVs and Personal Radars, however they do not utilize their launchers if they have one and shoot them down with their normal weapons, so bots cannot play Drop Zone well.

Bots can play every game mode except Ground War. Difficulty also determines how well they play the modes. Like in previous installments, bots will continue to shoot at their targets until enemies are dead or escaped, making a shotgun extremely deadly in their hands, and will continue to target even if enemies attempt to flee. Although they can be easily outpaced.

The main difference between bots and humans are that bots never switch to their sidearm unless they are using a sniper rifle or a marksman rifle, or if their sidearm is a launcher and cannot use it. Grenades or Semtex thrown by bots aren't usually that accurate, and almost are never the cause of the player's deaths. Bots also cannot use Stims, even if regeneration is set to None. Bots cannot use blueprints, however they can pick up a blueprint weapon when they are out of ammo.

The most common weapons in the hands of bots are SMGs, assault rifles, and shotguns. Usually, the higher the difficulty, the more powerful weapons they use. Light machine guns and marksman rifles are a common sight as well. However, bots can be easily outgunned when enemies are using stronger weapons.

If Spawn Ammo Mags are set to none, bots will only melee enemies, and if they detect a weapon with ammo nearby, they will run back and pick up said weapon. They can also scavenge ammo from other weapons which use the same ammunition type, (ex: A bot that kills a player that has a loaded Kilo 141, and the bot has a RAM-7, they will take the ammo from the Kilo 141 and use it for their own weapon).

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War[]

Bots return once again in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, albeit with minor restrictions. Players still need to add bots one by one. A new feature has been added called Bot Autofill, which automatically adds bots onto the selected team, this can be done in Bot Settings.

The maximum number of bots that can be added is 6 per team for team based modes, and 9 for Free-For-All modes.

Bots can only play Team Deathmatch, Domination, Free for All, Control, Hardpoint, and in a limited fashion, Gunfight (currently only Nuketown). Although Search & Destroy and VIP Escort is listed in the Custom Games menu, bot autofill will automatically be disabled if one attempts to bring their lobby of bots into these two modes. This may suggest that Treyarch is still working on the bots, and they may be able to play the aforementioned modes in a later update. They also cannot play on the maps Crossroads, Armada, U-Bahn, ICBM, KGB, or Game Show. Combined Arms and Fireteam modes are also not selectable in Custom Games.

Unlike in Modern Warfare, bots can now use their field upgrades and scorestreaks. They will also actively destroy enemy aircraft using the Cigma 2. Like in previous games (except Black Ops II), bots can be forced to use default loadouts by disabling custom loadouts. The most common weapons seen in the hands of bots are assault rifles, tactical rifles and submachine guns, and (most of the time) a Cigma 2. Bots sometimes use a Cigma 2 to destroy enemy gadgets.

Difficulty affects their aggressiveness and skill. Generally, Recruit and Regular bots will attempt to kill enemies who are in their field of view, and only throw grenades to take out enemies behind cover, and they cannot melee if the enemy gets in point blank range, but Regular bots are slightly more aggressive than Recruit bots. Hardened bots are simply Veteran bots but slightly less aggressive and use better weapons than Regular bots. Veteran bots are extremely aggressive and use powerful weapons, and use equipment such as Tomahawks often. They can also melee players who get too close as well as utilize shotguns in close quarters if they have one.

Call of Duty: Vanguard[]

Bots once again return in Call of Duty: Vanguard. the only primary weapons they use are the STG-44, MP40, MG42, Einhorn Revolving, M1 Garand, and the 3 line Rifle although they can pick up weapons that the player drops. They can play all game modes with the exception of Champion Hill.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II[]

Bots once again return in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. The maximum number of bots that can be added is 11, like Modern Warfare. The difficulty of Bots in MWII are, Recruit, Regular, Hardened, Veteran and Mixed.

They currently only use a limited amount of weapons in the game. They use the Lachmann-556, M4, TAQ-56, Lachmann Sub, Fennec 45, Sakin MG38, Lockwood MK2, MCPR-300, and Signal .50 as their primaries. and the X13 Auto, .50 GS, and P890 as their secondaries, although, they can pick up other weapon types when they are out of ammo.

Trivia[]

  • Hardened or Veteran Bots that are shot by their teammate will attack the ally who shot them.
    • Bots can be kicked due to friendly fire.
  • Bots can detect enemies through walls without actually seeing them.
  • Bots often draw their names from the surnames of the game's developers.
