It is the first Treyarch game to be released on the PC and it has a double development cycle of Treyarch's previous game, Call of Duty 3 and has been in development since late 2006.[1][2].[3] The game's first trailer was released on June 21st, and can be viewed here.[4]
[edit] Gameplay
World at War will make leaps for the series as the game will feature co-op missions, most likely a stepping stone for Call of Duty series. It will also feature squad gameplay not unlike of Brothers in Arms series of video games. It is also said to have a destructible environment. To help simulate the different style of warfare used by the Japanese, Treyarch has completely re-tinkered the enemy AI in World at War. Instead of taking cover and flanking in traditional European battle strategies, the hide in trees, sneak through the overgrowth and scrabble, katana in hand, in violent suicide attacks. The player will also be able to swim. World at War uses an improved version of the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare engine. At the Activision E3 2008 press conference they demonstrated the co-op play[5]. It was confirmed that they will use perks on online multiplayer with vehicles like tanks.
Call Of Duty: World At War might be given an 18+ rating, as the game is much more violent and bloodier than previous Call Of Duty games, and has more adult themes to it. Bad language might also be increased in the game, but this is not confirmed yet. One particular nasty scene in World At War, is a scene where a Japanese soldier is torturing an American soldier. There are several pictures of this scene, and one picture shows the Japanese soldier injuring the marine with either a sword, or a bamboo pole.
[edit] Plot
The story mode features two campaigns on two fronts, the United States Marine Corps battling the Japanese Armyin the Pacific, and the Soviet Red Army on the European Eastern Front towards the end of the war. One part of a level entitled "Maken Raid" shows an Allied prisoner of war being tortured by the Japanese before having his throat slit by a katana. The player's character witnesses this scene and is later rescued by U.S. Marines who liberate the camp. Two other levels were revealed by IGN: one involves the player using the machine guns on a PBY Catalina to attack a Japanese naval fleet, and the other shows the beginning of the Russian campaign. In that level, the player and a Russian sniper attack German troops under the cover of a bombing raid.
