[edit] Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

This game is the first to feature a named campaign: For the Record.

This story takes place five years after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Imran Zakhaev has been made into a martyr and the Ultranationalists, led by Zakhaev's right hand man Vladimir Makarov, have taken control of Russia. The game starts in Afghanistan, where local militias are being professionally trained by U.S. Army Rangers, including Sgt. Foley, Cpl. Dunn, and PFC Joseph Allen. After a battle in a small town, General Shepherd selects Allen to become an undercover C.I.A. agent.

Meanwhile, an international special military forces coalition called Task Force 141 has been aiming to take Makarov out of power. They send Cpt. "Soap" MacTavish and Sgt. Gary "Roach" Sanderson to an military airbase in Kazakhstan to recover a downed ACS module, which would give the Ultranationalists complete access to the United States' computer networks. General Shepherd has sent Allen, under the alias Alexei Borodin, on an undercover mission with Makarov. He is to assist them in performing a terrorist attack on Zakhaev National Airport in Moscow, Russia. While escaping from the scene, Makarov kills Allen and leaves his body. The attack is blamed on the United States and the Ultranationalists use this as an excuse to invade America. The Rangers are sent to combat the Russians in Virginia.

Task Force 141 traces a bullet back to Brazilian arms dealer Alejandro Rojas. The Task Force, including Cpt. MacTavish, Roach, and Ghost go to Brazil to find Rojas. After chasing him through a favela they capture and interrogate him. He tells them Makarov is after a prisoner in a Russian Gulag, Prisoner #627. They travel to Russia and, after assaulting an oil rig under enemy control to free civilians, they assault the Gulag. They break out Prisoner #627, who turns out to be Cpt. John Price, who joins the task force and takes joint control with Cpt. MacTavish.

Meanwhile, the fighting in the U.S. has moved to Washington D.C., and the Rangers must take control of the White House back from the Ultranationalists. The task force assaults a Russian submarine base, where Cpt. Price launches a nuclear missile to detonate over the Earth's atmosphere, which causes an E.M.P. that knocks out all electricity on the East Coast of the U.S., saving the Rangers from the large amounts of enemy helicopters and armored vehicles. D.C. is almost destroyed by the U.S. to eradicate the Ultranationalist presence, but the Rangers take control of the major buildings and deploy flares in time.

Meanwhile, Task Force 141 has narrowed down Makarov's location to one of two locations - a safehouse at the Georgia-Russian border and a U.S. vehicle disposal yard in Afghanistan. A team including Ghost and Roach is sent to the safehouse and a team including Cpt. Price and Cpt. MacTavish is sent to the airplane boneyard. At the safehouse, the Task Force is ambushed but they make it into the house, where they do not find Makarov but do download information off of his computer onto a DSM. General Shepherd shows up to extract them, but he kills Ghost and Roach and takes the DSM. It is revealed he was most likely using Makarov, in order to get revenge for the nuclear attack five years before. Cpt. MacTavish and Cpt. Price are labled as fugitives and war criminals. Cpt. MacTavish has to fight his way through two groups of enemies at the vehicle disposal yard, the Ultranationalists and Shepherd's troops, Shadow Company. With the help of Nikolai, Cpt. MacTavish and Cpt. Price escape from the vehicle disposal yard, after obtaining Shepherd's location from Makarov, who tells them over the radio since they share a common enemy.

Cpt. Price and Cpt. MacTavish assault Site Hotel Bravo, where Shepherd is located. It was supposed to be a suicide mission, where the only objective was to kill Shepherd, with out escaping. Nikolai was not even supposed to return to extract them. After assaulting the base and chasing Shepherd down a river on a boat, they shoot down his helicopter and fall down a waterfall. Soap chases after Shepherd with his knife, but Shepherd takes his own knife and stabs Soap in the chest. He is about to shoot him when Cpt. Price tackles him. While they fight on the ground, Soap pulls the knife out of his chest and throws into Shepherd's eye, most likely killing him. Despite being told not to, Nikolai arrives to extract them. He tells them he knows of a place where they can hide out until the situation is sorted out, and it cuts to the end credits.

Because of this major cliffhanger ending there will most likely be a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
