[edit] History

Before Canada was formed in 1867, it was a group of British colonies established over several centuries of settlement and conquest against the French and the Aboriginal inhabitants of the country. In 1867, the various colonies decided to form a confederation due to a lack of Britsh enthusiasm about funding and defending its colonies. While historians debate the exact causes of Confederation, a resurgent United States hostile to Britain after the American Civil War and the financial demands of establishing the continential railway are often listed.

For the first half-century of its existence, Canada possessed strong ties to the British Empire, with the majority of the population conceiving themselves as imperial subjects, and with Britain controlling Canada's constitution and foreign policy. Though a separate country, if the Crown ordered them to support them, they were to do that.

They supported the Empire through the Boer wars and World War 1. By World War 2 Canada had been granted a greater degree of independence and autonomy under the Statute of Westminster, and had declared war on the Axis powers independently, 10 days after the UK entered the war.

In WW1, the Canadians were known as some of the bravest and best soldiers on the Allies side. When the Central powers were notified that the Canadians were in the other trench, they knew it would be a tough fight. In a conflict in which victories were measured in yards, the constant success of the Canadian Corps was something of a miracle; the Canadians never failed to secure their objectives, and won strategically important battles such as at Vimy Ridge and Passchendale.

When the Second World War came about, Canada again fought alongside the mother country, albeit with more less enthusiasm in the beginning, though the Canadian forces were still major players in WW2. They fought in many turning point battles, such as the massacre at Dieppe, the Italian Campaign, the assault on Juno Beach in D Day and the liberation of Holland. By the end of the war, Canada had the world's third largest navy, and fifth-largest air force. Besides its significant military contribution, Canada was also a major source of arms and supplies for the Allies. The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan set up in Canada trained hundreds of thousands of Allied airmen, while Canadian food, equipment and weapons helped fuel Allied resistance all over Europe, even going so far as to give Britain a gift of one billion dollars to help fund the war. By the end of the conflict, Canada had emerged as a "middle power" on the world stage, while the demands of the wartime economy helped the country industrialize and become a prosporous, First World nation. Currently Canada is involved in combat/peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan under the banner of NATO.

Canadian Soldiers in Call of Duty 3.

The Canadian campaign is only seen in Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty: Roads to Victory. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada, part of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division are seen in Call of Duty 3.

Canadian soldiers are present in Modern Warfare 2 operating within Task Force 141. Notable Canadian characters are Royce, Meat and Ozone. An interesting fact about the Canadians in Modern Warfare 2 is that whilst the British, Americans and Australians have their flags as large coloured shoulder patches, Canadians have a small green and white version of their flag on their back.
