Challenges appear in Call of Duty: Ghosts mode Extinction.

A random Challenge will start when the player starts to drill a Hive, scan an Obelisk, power up a Generator, or fighting some Ancestors. On rare occasions, a challenge may not show up when it should.

Completing a challenge will reward every player in the game with a single Skill Point. On Hardcore difficulty, this is the only way to earn Skill Points beyond the Start with a Skill Point upgrade. In addition to the skill point, completing challenges will contribute to the player's score, give bonus XP, and will increase the amount of cash given after an objective is completed.

Challenges will not appear on barrier hives on Point of Contact, optional side doors on Mayday, two mandatory doors in Mayday before reaching the cargo area, the chlorine gas section on Mayday, the Vanguard sections on Awakening, the terminal defense section of Awakening, the escape sections on Point of Contact or Awakening, and the final battles with the Breeder and Kraken.

If the player(s) completes all challenges given to them in a match, they will be awarded Teeth.

Every challenge has a fail condition. Some challenges have fail conditions that can be activated during the objective, while most challenges will simply fail if the objective is completed without the challenge having been finished.

Because challenges are a source of Skill Points, in addition to other bonuses provided for completing challenges such as XP and score, players are heavily incentivized to complete as many challenges as possible.

Challenges[]

  • Use only melee attacks to damage the aliens. (First hive only - Point of Contact)
  • Don't take any damage from the aliens. (First hive only - Point of Contact)
  • Keep shot accuracy at 75% or higher until the hive is destroyed. (Point of Contact only)
  • Keep shot accuracy at 50% or higher until the hive is destroyed.
  • Don't go into last stand until the hive is destroyed. (Co-op only)
  • Don't bleed out until the hive is destroyed. (Co-op only)
  • Protect a random player from going into final stand. (Co-op only)
  • Kill 10 aliens using Traps. (5 aliens on Solo)
  • Kill 10 aliens using Turrets. (5 aliens on Solo)
  • Kill 10 aliens using Propane Tanks. (5 aliens on Solo - Point of Contact)
  • Kill 25 aliens while prone. (15 aliens on Solo)
  • Kill 25 aliens using Pistols before the hive is destroyed. (15 aliens on Solo)
  • Kill 25 aliens using SMG's before the hive is destroyed. (Co-op only)
  • Kill 25 aliens using Assault Rifles before the hive is destroyed. (Co-op only)
  • Kill 25 aliens using Sniper Rifles before the hive is destroyed. (Co-op only)
  • Kill 25 aliens using LMGs before the hive is destroyed. (Co-op only)
  • Kill 25 aliens using Shotguns before the hive is destroyed. (Co-op only)
  • Kill 15 Scouts with melee damage before the hive is destroyed. (10 with two or three players, 5 on Solo)
  • Kill 5 aliens while they are in the air before the hive is destroyed. (3 aliens on Solo)
  • Kill a Scorpion with melee damage before the hive is destroyed.
  • Find and kill the Leper in 30 seconds.
  • Don't reload your weapon for 60 seconds.
  • Don't use any abilities for 90 seconds. (This includes class upgrade abilities such as the Medic Upgrade)
  • Don't spend any money for 2 minutes.
  • Do not take any damage from exploding Seeker aliens until the hive is destroyed.
  • Spend $10,000 before the hive is destroyed. ($6,000 on Solo)
  • Spend $20,000 before the hive is destroyed. ($15,000 with three or less players)
  • Keep the drill health at 50 or higher until the hive is destroyed.
  • Kill 10 aliens while at full health before the hive is destroyed. (8 aliens with 2 or 3 players, 3 aliens on Solo)
  • Kill 10 aliens without taking damage before the hive is destroyed. (8 aliens with 2 or 3 players, 3 aliens on Solo)
  • Kill 8 aliens by having each player cause damage before the hive is destroyed. (5 aliens with two or three players, 3 aliens on solo)
  • Defeat the Breeder in 90 seconds or less. (120 seconds on Solo - Nightfall)
  • Destroy 10 Breeder eggs before they hatch. (Co-op only - Nightfall)
  • Kill the 10 marked aliens before any others, before the hive is destroyed. (8 aliens with 2 or 3 players, 3 aliens on Solo)
  • Kill 10 aliens at a range of 65 ft before the hive is destroyed. (5 aliens on Solo. Aliens will be marked in white if they are a sufficient range away to count towards a challenge)
  • Stay in the circle and kill 20 aliens. (10 aliens on Solo; Exodus - 10, 15, or 20 depending on which gate opens to a street battle, the circle shifts every 5 or 8 kills on Exodus)
  • Defeat the tentacle before the hive is destroyed. (Mayday)
  • Kill 10 enemies while jumping before the Obelisk is scanned. (5 aliens on Solo; Awakening)
  • Kill 1 Gargoyle(s) with melee damage before the obelisk is scanned/generator is powered up. (Awakening/Exodus, this challenge is exceedingly rare)
  • Kill 5 flying aliens before the obelisk is scanned/generator is powered up. (3 on Solo; Awakening/Exodus)
  • Kill 5 Bombers before they explode. (3 on Solo; Awakening/Exodus)
  • Kill 20 aliens while every player is prone before the obelisk is scanned/generator is powered up. (Co-op only; Awakening/Exodus, 15 aliens if playing with 2 or 3 players)
  • Kill 20 aliens using LMG's before the obelisk is scanned/generator is powered up. (Co-op only; Awakening/Exodus)
  • Kill 20 aliens using SMG's before the obelisk is scanned/generator is powered up. (Co-op only; Awakening/Exodus)
  • Kill 20 aliens using a semi-automatic rifle before the obelisk is scanned/generator is powered up. (Co-op only; Awakening/Exodus)
  • Kill 10 aliens without taking damage before the obelisk is scanned/generator is powered up. (3 aliens on Solo; Awakening/Exodus)
  • Kill the 10 marked enemies before any others, before the obelisk is scanned/generator is powered up. (3 aliens on Solo; Awakening/Exodus)
  • Kill 10 aliens with traps before the obelisk is scanned/generator is powered up. (5 aliens on Solo; Awakening/Exodus)
  • Kill 20 aliens on higher ground before the obelisk is scanned/generator is powered up. (5 aliens on Solo; Awakening/Exodus)

  • Kill 20 aliens with any of the marked weapons before the obelisk is scanned/generator is powered up. (Co-op only; Awakening/Exodus).
  • Spend $20,000 before the obelisk is scanned/generator is powered up. ($6,000 on Solo; Awakening/Exodus)
  • Every player purchase a new weapon before the obelisk is scanned/generator is powered up. (Co-op only; Awakening/Exodus)
  • Defeat the Ancestor in 180 seconds or less (Exodus, given to one of the first three Ancestors that attack the base at random)
  • Do not take damage from an Ancestor for 120 seconds. (Exodus, 90 seconds on solo, given to one of the first three Ancestors that attack the base at random)
  • Deal 20000 damage to the Ancestor's weak point. (Exodus, 10000 damage with 2 or 3 players, 5000 damage in solo, given to one of the first three Ancestors that attack the base at random)

Achievements/Trophies[]

Completionist (25 Gamerscore/ Bronze Trophy Bronze Trophy PS3 icon) - Complete all Extinction challenges and escape in regular or hardcore difficulty.

Nightfall Completionist (30 Gamerscore/ Silver Trophy Silver Trophy PS3 icon) - Complete all challenges and kill the Breeder in Nightfall in regular or hardcore difficulty.

Mayday Completionist (30 Gamerscore/ Silver Trophy Silver Trophy PS3 icon) - Complete all challenges and kill the Kraken in Mayday in regular or hardcore difficulty.

Awakening Completionist (30 Gamerscore/ Silver Trophy Silver Trophy PS3 icon) - Complete all challenges and escape in Awakening in regular or hardcore difficulty.

Nemesis Completionist (30 Gamerscore/ Silver Trophy Silver Trophy PS3 icon) - Complete all challenges and the final Ancestor encounter in Nemesis in regular or hardcore difficulty.

Trivia[]

  • The Barrier Hive Challenges to protect the helicopter from Scorpions in Point of Contact cannot be failed, though it doesn't award a skill point like other challenges.
  • Dropping money does not count as spending money.
  • Going into Last Stand counts as lying prone for the kill 20 aliens while every player is prone before the obelisk is scanned/generator is powered up Challenge. (Co-op only; Awakening/Exodus)
  • Sentry Guns and Vulture drones count as turrets for turret kill challenges.
  • On accuracy challenges, the Grenade Turret decrements accuracy before the grenade is fired, and if the grenade hits an alien, simply restores progress on accuracy back to its original state. Thus, the Grenade Turret can never increase the accuracy on a challenge, only maintain or decrease accuracy.
  • On accuracy challenges, a Shotgun only needs to land a single pellet in a shot for a shot to count as having hit. Each individual pellet is not graded for accuracy, just the shot as a whole.
  • Nightfall used to feature the Challenge "Kill a Phantom alien while it is jumping", but it got removed in the 20 February 2014 update. Most of the time the challenge did not work properly, making the already hard challenge even harder to complete.
  • During weapon based kill challenges, markers on the map will appear to indicate weapons that will count for the purpose of progressing the challenge. These markers do not appear when the challenge is active on Nightfall, however.
  • If every player uses the Pistol Only Relic, the only weapon kill challenge that can appear that game is the pistol kill challenge. All the other weapon kill challenges will be disabled.
  • The USR counts as a semi-automatic rifle for the purpose of semi-automatic rifle kill challenges despite being a bolt action weapon.
  • On the "Do not go into last stand" or "Do not bleed out" challenge, a player that is already in the last stand or bleeded out states when the respective challenge starts will not count as failing the challenge. The challenge only checks if a player enters the state while the challenge is active, not if a player is already in that state to begin with.
  • On the "Do not take damage from an Ancestor" challenge, the Ancestor is allowed to be killed before the challenge's timer expires with no penalty to the challenge. However, the timer still needs to count down to 0 before the Skill Point is awarded.
  • On rare occasions, a challenge will fail to be given in sections that usually give challenges. Should this occur, no skill point is earned for that section, but the game does not treat this as a challenge failed as it pertains to stat tracking.
