Close quarters combat
From the Call of Duty Wiki
Close quarters combat (abbreviated CQC), also known as Close Quarters Battle (abbreviated CQB), is a type of fighting that takes place at a very short range, usually conducted by small units. While firearms may be used in CQC, hand-to-hand fighting more often takes place in such situations. In urban warfare, engagements between opposing forces often result in CQC.
CQC tactics typically employ small infantry units using light, compact weapons in small, enclosed spaces. Due to the different variables present in CQC (hostages, civilians, enemy, and/or friendly units), CQC demands rapid response and precise application of lethal force to minimize collateral damage. Military Special Operation Forces (such as the SAS or US Army Rangers) are highly trained and well equipped to fight proficiently in CQC, among other types of combat.
[edit] CQC Weapons and Tools
Firearms such as submachine guns and shotguns, and to a lesser extent assault rifles and pistols, are specifically designed to engage enemies in CQC. The stock of most firearms can also be used to strike an enemy, as the stocks of some weapons are made iron. The M4A1 Carbine, an assault rifle, is a popular weapon in CQC. It possesses relatively short barrel (compared to the M16) small enough to feel comfortable in CQC while providing reliable accuracy at longer ranges and is highly versatile, able to be equipped with multiple attachments to fit the situation.
Nonlethal anti-personnel weapons such as flashbangs and stun grenades are also designed for similar situations, particularly in CQC that occurs in urban environments. Knives are a common weapon used in CQC, which can often be more effective than firearms. Explosive weapons, such as C4 and Claymore mines can also be used in CQC to kill and/or injure enemies.

In Call of Duty games, the player is able to use melee attacks when the enemy is within striking distance or when the equipped weapon is ineffective in CQC. Up until Call of Duty 4, the melee attack consisted of using the stock of the equipped weapon to bash an enemy. The knife was not available in multiplayer, and has extremely limited use in single player campaign mode for missions that feature stealth and/or reconnaissance.
The knife was introduced as the standard melee weapon in Call of Duty 4, where players can use the knife in both single and multiplayer modes. The flashbang, stun grenade, C4, and Claymore were also introduced in Call of Duty 4, available in both single and multiplayer modes as well. Tactics such "no-scoping" and Quick-Scoping, typically used by experienced players, have also developed to use sniper rifles and bolt-action rifles in CQC.
