"Bolt-action sniper rifle. Deadly from the waist up."
— Description.

The DSR 50 is a bullpup, bolt-action Sniper Rifle featured in Call of Duty: Black Ops II.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II[]

Campaign[]

The DSR 50 can be selected in the customizable loadout. Otherwise, it is used by the Mercs in "Celerium", applied with Blue Tiger Camouflage. Also, the DSR 50 is sometimes used by the SEALs in the Strike Force mission "Shipwreck".

Multiplayer[]

Along with the SVU-AS, it is available to be unlocked once Create-A-Class is available to the player, but must be unlocked with the use of an unlock token.

The DSR-50 has the greatest one shot kill potential out of all the sniper rifles. The DSR-50 does 98 damage per bullet, the highest in the sniper rifle class. The DSR-50 has body multipliers to the head, neck, arms, and the entire torso. The DSR-50 will only fail to get a one shot kill if the bullet hits the enemy in the legs. The ability to get a one shot kill to the lower torso is unique to the DSR-50 among sniper rifles. The DSR-50 is easily the most consistent sniper rifle with regards to scoring one shot kills. The DSR-50, like other sniper rifles, has high penetration power, allowing it to deal massive damage through surfaces, although the user should expect to get less one shot kills when shooting through walls and such.

The DSR-50 has by far the slowest rate of fire in the sniper rifle class, firing at an abysmal 40 RPM. This equates to roughly two shots every three seconds, at max. The DSR-50 will force users to wait a very long time before the next shot can be fired. Users should pack a secondary weapon in case the first shot either misses or doesn't get a kill.

The DSR-50 also has the worst accuracy in the sniper rifle class. The DSR-50 has a precision scope that provides better definition at long range, but at the expense of peripheral vision. The DSR-50 has large recoil per shot, always kicking upwards, and the DSR-50 tends to kick to the right, but it won't always kick to the right. The DSR-50 has a slow 750 centerspeed, but considering how slowly the DSR-50 fires, all of the recoil will be countered by the time the user is ready to fire another shot. The DSR-50 will gain a centerspeed increase when crouching or laying in prone. More problematic for the DSR-50 is idle sway. The DSR-50 has the most idle sway out of all the sniper rifles, and it will make landing a shot more difficult.

The DSR-50 has poor handling characteristics, like other sniper rifles. The DSR-50 allows users to move at 95% of the base speed, but strafe at only 40% of the base speed. The DSR-50 has a very slow aim-down sight time of 400 milliseconds, and the DSR-50 has absolutely horrible hip-fire accuracy. The user should try to avoid hip-firing the DSR-50 at almost all times. The DSR-50 also has a 300 millisecond sprint-out time, 50 milliseconds longer than all other sniper rifles. The DSR-50 also has slow reloads, with the reload animation being 3.4 seconds long, or 4.5 seconds long if the magazine is completely empty. The user can Reload Cancel after 2.5 seconds. This is the slowest reload cancel out of all the sniper rifles, but when considering just how slowly the DSR-50 goes through ammunition, 2.5 seconds is fine.

The DSR-50 has the smallest magazine capacity in its class, holding just five rounds per magazine. This isn't too big a problem, as the DSR-50 fires so slowly and can kill with a single bullet. The DSR-50 has a small starting ammo loadout of just thirty rounds. Despite having a smaller magazine capacity than the Ballista, the DSR-50 allows users to spawn in with two more rounds total than the Ballista.

The DSR-50 has the standard assortment of attachments available to it.

The Suppressor is a terrible choice for the DSR-50, as it removes the DSR-50's ability to get one shot kills to the forearms and the lower torso. The DSR-50 retains a decent one shot kill area overall, but the DSR-50's terrible rate of fire and lacking statistics compared to other sniper rifles make it so the one-shot kill potential of the DSR-50 must be preserved at all costs.

The Ballistics CPU is a fantastic logical choice for the DSR-50, which suffers from having too much idle sway. It reduces the DSR-50's idle sway amount by thirty percent. It should be noted that the DSR-50 with a Ballistics CPU will still have more idle sway than the Ballista and the SVU-AS. Still, Ballistics CPU is a fine option that counters one of the DSR-50's big weaknesses.

Alternative scopes are available to the DSR-50 in the form of the ACOG Scope, Variable Zoom Scope, and the Dual Band Scope. Using any of these attachments will cut the idle sway speed of the DSR-50 in half. Combining the Variable Zoom Scope or Dual Band Scope with a Ballistics CPU will significantly reduce the idle sway of the DSR-50.

The ACOG Scope acts as a close quarters alternative to the other scopes on offer, as it will not blot out the user's peripheral vision and it has a much lower innate zoom level than the other sight pictures. The ACOG Scope still allows users to hold their breath to steady the scope, but the prompt to do so will not appear on screen.

The Variable Zoom Scope gives the DSR-50 two different zoom levels, one lower than the default, and one higher than the default. The crosshairs in the scope are also changed visually. The Variable Zoom Scope allows users to change the zoom level to better fit the situation.

The Dual Band Scope illuminates enemies yellow hot and makes the environment appear green. The Dual Band Scope helps greatly with target acquisition. The only issue is that users with Cold-Blooded will not be illuminated yellow, although the Dual Band Scope retains enough detail on the environment to identify these enemies.

The Laser Sight will increase the DSR-50's hip-fire accuracy by 27.5%. The hip-fire spread remains too large to make hip-fire viable. More notably, the Laser Sight's red diode can assist users in Quickscoping, as the red diode can act as a visual indicator to the center of the screen. Users who like to quickscope with the DSR-50 may want to use the Laser Sight, but those not interested in quickscoping should avoid it.

Extended Clip increases the DSR-50's magazine capacity from five rounds to seven, and increases the starting ammo loadout from thirty rounds to 42 rounds. This attachment is unnecessary. Rarely will the user need the extra magazine capacity or the extra ammo provided.

Fast Mag makes the DSR-50 reload more quickly. The DSR-50's reload speed isn't too good, so Fast Mag is a logical choice to ensure users aren't caught off-guard as easily.

FMJ increases the DSR-50's penetration power. The DSR-50 isn't well-built to shooting at targets through walls, as it has a terrible fire rate and not a lot of ammo on tap, but FMJ can help ensure a one shot kill through walls on the rare occasion.

The DSR-50 best compares to the Ballista, as both are very slow firing bolt-action sniper rifles. Compared to the Ballista, the DSR-50 has superior one shot kill capability and a slightly larger starting ammo loadout. Otherwise, the Ballista is superior, having a faster rate of fire (47 RPM vs 40 RPM), a faster aim-down sight time (350 milliseconds vs 400 milliseconds), much less idle sway, a faster sprint-out speed, a faster movement speed of 96%, faster reloads, a superior magazine capacity, and the ability to equip the Iron Sight attachment, which not only reduces idle sway, but also makes the aim down sight time only 298 milliseconds long. Unless the user heavily values the extra one shot kill capability of the DSR-50, the Ballista is strictly better, especially for quickscoping or similar aggressive sniper users.

After the patch 1.13, the rate of fire of DSR 50 was reduced from 50 RPM to 40 RPM. This lower ROF makes it impossible to get a "quad feed" unless one gets multiple kills with one bullet, as by the time the fourth person is killed, the first of the four kills in the feed will already disappear.

Zombies[]

"Hmmm...originally a sniper rifle but modified for larger rounds...ooh! And a hydraulic recoil buffer! Bravo, say I!"
Marlton Johnson, when obtaining the DSR 50 from the Mystery Box in Die Rise.

The DSR 50 can be acquired from the Mystery Box for 950 points, and can also be dug up with a Shovel in Origins. The main benefit of the weapon initially is its high damage, able to score one-shot kills up to round 12. However, it suffers from less accuracy than in multiplayer, a small magazine of only four rounds, a fairly sluggish reload and only 48 rounds in reserve.

When Pack-a-Punched via the Pack-a-Punch Machine, it will become the Dead Specimen Reactor 5000. Like previous sniper rifles, the Dead Specimen Reactor 5000 gains a massive damage boost, capable of killing multiple zombies with a single body shot up until round 25. It also gains a larger magazine of 8 and 96 rounds in reserve. Accuracy is also notably increased, making the Dead Specimen Reactor 5000 much more effective at engaging zombies at longer ranges without missing. The gun receives the Variable Zoom Scope and idle sway is decreased. The DSR 50 is capable of being Pack-a-Punched multiple times, randomly adding or removing an attachment, including a Suppressor or Iron Sights (though the Iron Sights attachment is not available in multiplayer or campaign).

Once Pack-a-Punched and combined with perks such as Speed Cola and Double Tap Root Beer, the Dead Specimen Reactor 5000 becomes a powerful weapon to use at medium to long range to take down multiple zombies in a single shot. If the player acquires the Iron Sights attachment, or has Double Tap Root Beer, it becomes more user-friendly at closer ranges. With Double Tap 2.0, the Dead Specimen Reactor 5000 becomes one of the most powerful non-infinite damage wonder weapons in the entire game, being a 1-shot headhsot up until the early 40's, and still being a quick 2-tap kill beyond that. Only a select few guns like the Voice of Justice and Cobra have similar damage outputs.

The DSR is unique in having the Suppressor as an attachment, but it is utterly useless, having no actual advantage and may even have a disadvantage. It is best to re-Punch the DSR if the Suppressor is applied to it.

On Origins only, the DSR lacks the iron sights attachment. Instead, only the Suppressor and Variable Zoom Scope can be gained. However, using console commands on the PC version can give both the un-upgraded and upgraded DSR iron sights.

Trivia[]

  • "Drei Wölfe", which means "Three Wolves" in German, is written on the left side of the gun, just below the rear of the scope, accompanied by an emblem of three wolves howling at a crosshair in a homage to the infamous Three Wolf Moon meme.
  • "DSR", "Precision .50cal" and "Made in Germany" are written on the side of the gun.
  • Just under the scope, the writing "3 Arc Optics" is visible, a reference to Treyarch.
  • The DSR 50's serial number is "JP04022009".
  • The DSR 50 uses .50 BMG rounds, according to the Ballistics CPU.
  • There is a spare magazine situated in front of the trigger of the gun. However, it is totally cosmetic.
  • Attaching ACOG or Dual Band Scope removes the folded bipod.
  • In the multiplayer reveal trailer, the DSR 50 had a different scope model which is the one currently equipped on XPR-50.
    • Also in that trailer, the HUD says DSR 50 is semi-automatic.
  • Marlton's favorite weapon is DSR 50. He also uses it in the Die Rise opening cutscene.
  • The DSR 50 has a visible hexagonal pattern when camouflage is applied.
  • The DSR 50's default scope reticle is almost identical to L96A1's.
    • Its reticle is totally black, unlike other 3 sniper rifles which the center of their reticle is red.
  • The fire rate of the DSR 50 is still 50 RPM on Wii U Multiplayer, due to the fact that there is no patch that decreases its fire rate.
  • The character adjusts the scope of DSR 50 when he picks up the weapon or a match begins.
    • The character will just pull out the gun from his back if one of these attachments is equipped: ACOG, Variable Zoom and Dual Band Scope.
