"Fetch me their souls!"
— The Demonic Announcer

The Demonic Announcer is the title given to the entity that controls the zombies and gives aid to the characters of a map such as wallbuys, Mystery Box, Perk-a-Cola Machines, Power-Ups, and Gobblegum Machines. The Announcer appears in every Zombies map developed by Treyarch, with the exception of the Dead Ops Arcade saga and the Call of Duty: World at War version of Nacht der Untoten. The Announcer also appears in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Zombies mode.

Every time a player picks up a Power-Up, the Demonic Announcer will speak and if the Mystery Box moves, it can be heard laughing. Usually the Demonic Announcer both controls the zombies and aids the main characters.

Trivia[]

  • The Demonic Announcer is not fully included (except Fire Sale and Death Machine) in the German, Austrian, French, Spanish and Russian versions of Black Ops. However, upon completion of the Richtofen's Grand Scheme quest, she appears for the rest of the playtime on Moon.
    • The Demonic Announcer is only present in the revamped World at War maps in the French, Italian, Spanish and Russian versions of Black Ops.
    • In the French, Portuguese and Spanish versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops III, the Demonic Announcer on both The Giant and Shadows of Evil uses Edward Richtofen's voicelines instead of Samantha Maxis.
  • The zombies' eyes will change color depending on who the Demonic Announcer is. Their eyes are yellow under Samantha Maxis, Ludvig Maxis, and the Forsaken, blue under Richtofen, red under the Warden and Kortifex, and white under the Avogadro.
    • Even though the zombies' eyes are yellow in Shadows of Evil, The Giant, Der Eisendrache, and Zetsubou No Shima. The announcers on these maps are unknown. However, Richtofen turns to Samantha when he speaks to the Demonic Announcer.
    • In Origins, although Samantha Maxis talks to the characters in Origins, Richtofen claims several times that Samantha is not who she really is. For example, he says that "I do not intend to follow my former friend into insanity. Besides, I know what you really are, Samantha", and "My companions may be easily manipulated, I will not, I know what you really are.".
      • Treyarch's Origins intro cutscene has Samantha's voice completely demonic, supporting Richtofen's claim on the announcer identity. Samantha has a similar demonic voice when she gives power ups, during the Moon Easter egg, as well as Origins' zombie blood whispers.
        • However, the timeline seems to disprove this as in the Origins entry, it is stated that Primis' actions in France free Samantha from her imprisonment in Agartha, but not before being sent to their next destination.
    • The Crusader Zombies that spawn in main chamber have bright purple eyes in the Origins cutscene. However, their eyes are blue in-game.
      • In the Call of Duty: Black Ops III version of Origins, the Crusader Zombies now have yellow eyes like the rest of the normal zombies, which may imply that they canonically did not have a different eye-color, despite being portrayed as such within Call of Duty: Black Ops II.
  • In TranZit, Richtofen has special announcer quotes that appear only in the first game of the player. On console, they can also be heard upon playing on the "Local" mode. One of the most notable quotes play when the player picks up a power-up for the first time, to which Richtofen replies instead of the standard power-up name: "*Demonic scream that fades into Richtofen coughing* Excuse me, just getting used to the Aether, plays havoc on the pipes, ah.. right.".
  • In Buried, Maxis remains silent when players pick up Power-Ups. Similarly, when the Mystery box moves, the usual "Bye-bye" greeting cannot be heard, and only Samantha's demonic laugh can be heard.
  • In Attack of the Radioactive Thing, Willard Wyler will occasionally taunt Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson and threaten to send her to Nightfall.
  • In a patch for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 shortly before launch, subtitles were added to every map detailing who the Demonic Announcers were. For Voyage of Despair and IX, the Announcer was listed to be the High Priest of Chaos. However, due to his death during the events of Dead of the Night in the Chaos Zombies comic, it is impossible for the Priest to be the announcer. These subtitles were soon removed afterwards.
    • During this patch in the map Classified, Samantha's lines say "Zombie Announcer", rather than Samantha.
  • In Call of Duty World at War, the zombies have orange eyes instead of yellow.
  • Announcer quotes for the Shadowman and Monty were made for Revelations but were ultimately cut.
  • Both Mob of the Dead and Blood of the Dead reuse Samantha Maxis’ announcer quotes, however in Blood of the Dead the Warden will say “Fetch me their souls!” during a dog round and he can be heard laughing when the Mystery Box moves or when the player dies.
