Farewell to Friends

Troina, Sicily

August 5th, 1943

1040 Hours

Bloomfield: (offscreen) Man, they've been bombing that berg for hours! There ain't gonna be no one left to fight.

The screen fades in to Roger and his team riding on the tank as they approach the town of Troina. Mount Etna looms in the background.

Kelly: Suits me. At least the wind's shifted, I've had my fill of ash from that damn volcano.

Denley: It ain't gonna be so bad, Hawk said the Germans are retreatin'. That's why the brass ordered another push.

Kelly: He said that the last five times we've gone in!

Bloomfield: Yeah, well if it wasn't for Hawk, none of us woulda made it outta Africa alive. So clam up and enjoy the ride.

Denley: Brooklyn's right, Hawk's always had our back, ain't no reason to doubt him now...

Suddenly, a tank in front of them explodes and kills a few soldiers.

Bloomfield: Everyone off the tank!

Roger and the squad dismount from the tank and link up with Hawkins next to the destroyed tank.

Hawkins: Alright, let's get down to business. Keep formation and stay alert.

The squad moves up the street and encounters German soldiers, forcing them to engage in battle until they move up to another intersection. At the intersection, a German machine gun opens fire and forces the squad to take cover.

Hawkins: Nobody move! Get back! (to Roger) You and Kelly flank that nest, we'll give you covering fire.

Hawkins and the squad provide covering fire while Roger and Kelly flank past the machine gun to another section of the street. They turn a corner and cut down an alley to the back entrance of the building. Once they enter the building, Roger and Kelly run up the stairs to the second level where the machine gun is and eliminate the Germans.

Hawkins: Keep moving up the street!

Roger and Kelly run back down to the street and reunite with the squad just as a German artillery barrage hits the street.

Hawkins: They got this whole street zeroed! Stay clear, stay clear! Incoming!

The squad runs through the street trying to avoid being hit by the artillery barrage and see a building nearby.

Hawkins: To that building. Stay low.

The squad takes cover on the side of the street by the house while the artillery barrage continues.

Hawkins: We gotta get out of the open! Vic, get this door open!

Denley: I'm on it!

Denley kicks the door open only to find himself shot multiple times by German waiting right behind it firing a machine gun from inside the house. His body is forced back over the railing and into the street, possibly squeezing the trigger on his BAR causing it to discharge its clip as he falls. Bloomfield tosses a grenade in and kills the German.

Kelly: Vic! MEDIC!

Kelly runs over to Denley and checks his body for vital signs.

Kelly: Medic!

Hawkins: Into that building, go!

Kelly: We gotta help Vic!

Hawkins: He's dead already. There's nothing we can do.

Kelly and Roger follow Hawkins and the squad into the house, where an artillery explosion hits near Roger. Roger gets back on his feet when Hawkins checks on him.

Hawkins: You alright, Corporal? Good. We have a long way to go. Everybody stay alert.

The squad continues to push further into town and encounters more German resistance. After dealing with some of the Germans, the squad continues on until they reach a house occupied by American soldiers and overlooking the town square.

Hawkins: Everybody in!

The squad holes up in the house and deals with the attacking German soldiers, who arrive more numerously.

Hawkins: Corporal, give us cover from upstairs!

Roger runs up to the second level of the house and helps to repel the attacking Germans from the town square. Once the Germans have been eliminated, the squad pushes into the town square and continues on through the town until an explosion goes off near them, along with an ominous loud bang.

Bloomfield: What the...?

Up ahead, a Sherman tank that was rolling through the streets is destroyed by an 88 heavy gun. The artillery gun is firing from inside a cathedral.

Kelly: 88 in the church!

Hawkins: Everybody move up! Get out of the line of fire! We gotta take that thing out, follow me! Head around the back!

The squad flanks around the cannon and through the streets until they enter the cathedral from the rear. After dealing with the German defenders inside the cathedral, Roger has a clear path to the 88 gun.

Hawkins: Plant a charge on that 88!

Roger plants some explosives on the 88 gun and gets clear. The gun explodes, allowing the squad to regroup at the back of the cathedral by a mural. Kelly takes in the sights and whistles.

Kelly: This town must be at least a thousand years old.

Bloomfield: Yeah. Too bad Vic ain't here ta see it. Lousy Kraut bastards.

Kelly: I still can't believe it.

Bloomfield: (pounds the masonry with his right fist in frustration) That sonnovabitch. That selfish, mean-spirited bulldog was the toughest soldier we had.

Hawkins: Gather up.

The squad gathers around Hawkins.

Hawkins: Everyone alright? Now, maybe we can say a word or two about Vic.

End of level.
