"Al-Asad's army is preparing to execute Nikolai, a former informant of ours. Sgt. Kamarov will be on the ground to assist us in a rescue mission. We take care of our friends."
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered level description
"Welcome to the new Russia, Captain Price."
Kamarov

"Blackout" is the fourth mission in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. Taking place the day after Khaled Al-Asad's coup in the Arabian Peninsula, this mission sees the Special Air Service team, led by Captain Price, joining forces with Russian Loyalist troops in the Caucasus Mountains to rescue a Russian informant and liberate an Ultranationalist-controlled village.

Characters[]

Plot[]

Shortly after Al-Asad makes his move and overthrows the government of President Yasir Al-Fulani, the SAS learns that Nikolai, their informant, who provided the SAS with intelligence on their mission aboard the Estonian freighter Väljakutse, has been compromised and taken prisoner by the Ultranationalist forces. Realizing that the Ultranationalists intend to execute Nikolai as a traitor, Price leads a rescue mission into the Caucasus to retrieve the informant, remarking that "We take care of our friends." Inserting near Nikolai's position, the team first silently eliminates several guard posts before meeting up with Russian Loyalist troops lead by Sergeant Kamarov.

It is clear from their discussion that Price and Kamarov, despite having fought alongside each other in the past, have very different objectives in this mission. For Price, Nikolai's survival is paramount and beyond all other considerations. Kamarov, meanwhile, hopes to free the nearby village from Ultranationalist control and eliminate the threat posed by their BM-21s. Since both need the other's forces in order to be successful, a great deal of tension exists between the two men. As the Loyalist troops make their assault upon the village, MacTavish provides sniper support from the nearby ridge and eliminates a force of Ultranationalist helicopter troops flanking from the left, allowing the Loyalists to make greater gains in the village.

Eventually however, Gaz, frustrated with Kamarov's stalling, threatens Kamarov, succesfully getting Nikolai's location out of him, a house at the end of the village. Abandoning their Loyalist allies, the SAS team makes their way to the house. MacTavish and Price enter the house as Gaz cuts the power, and the team successfully secures Nikolai. With the informant secure and the village in control of the Loyalists, the team is extracted via helicopter that heads for a German safehouse.

Trivia[]

  • Though the pilots of the Blackhawk have American accents, if actually looking at the pilots, they are random Russian Loyalists. Their bodies in Hunted are those of ordinary SAS troopers.
  • On the Wii Version, the television the Ultranationalists are watching is replaced by a radio.
  • The BM-21s that the Loyalists are trying to destroy are unmanned, even when firing.
  • In the area where the player rappels down the cliff, the player can throw a flashbang, followed by a grenade, at the area in between Captain Price and Kamarov, making Captain Price and Gaz run away. This leads to Kamarov rambling on when his sentence is supposed to have stopped. He says "Captain Price, I have one more favor to ask of you and your men. Although my men are specifically trained for this type of situation, with your help, we could do it that much more efficiently."
  • When Kamarov encounters Price, he says "BM21s on the other side of the hill", but the subtitle says "The Ultranationalists have BM21s on the other side of the hill." This was fixed in the Remastered version.
  • The Loyalists can actually be shot and killed by the player without failing the mission during the heat of battle.
  • While climbing the hill after meeting Sgt. Kamarov, if looking back towards where the player had started off, one can see the edges of the map.
  • When Gaz orders the player to plant the claymores, if looking closely, his mouth is not even moving. Captain Price's is, indicating that Gaz was not supposed to say the line originally, but they changed it later on.
  • If the player drops their M21 before they have to provide sniper support, there will be a new M21 laying up against the fence with 20-30 rounds.
  • After Kamarov asks to protect his men from the helicopter troops, Gaz says, "We should just beat it out of him sir", but the voice belongs to Captain Price.
  • In the beginning of the level when the pictures of Nikolai are being shown, there is a picture from "Heat" which has not occurred yet.
  • If the player throws a flashbang in the room where Nikolai is being held to kill the final guard, Nikolai will be stunned after Captain Price gives him an AK-74u.
  • Just after Nikolai has been rescued, Captain Price says "Big Bird this is Bravo Six..." but the subtitles read "Big Bird this Bravo Six".
  • If the player does not follow Captain Price to support Kamarov's men from the cliffs he will say "Soap, over here" yet no subtitles will be shown even when they're enabled. And his lips will not move when he says this, he will only nod his head a few times.
  • When nearing the house where Nikolai is held Captain Price will order Gaz to cut the power and says "Soap, get ready" but the subtitles say "Everyone else get ready". This was fixed in the Remastered version.
  • After talking to Big Bird, Captain Price will say "Let's go!" however the subtitles will read "Let's go, let's go!"
  • A RPG-7 can be seen on the right side of the right pilot of Big Bird.
  • In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, even if the player swapped their M4A1 SOPMOD for a different weapon, Soap can still be seen holding it at the end of the mission. He is also wearing a unique watch, that only appears in one other mission.
  • In the original version, Gaz will hold Kamarov face-first over the edge, with Kamarov falling shocked to his knees afterward. In the Remastered version, Kamarov is held with his back over the edge and remains standing afterwards, although slightly nervous.
