The Fire mode is a function featured on several automatic guns in Call of Duty, Call of Duty: United Offensive, Call of Duty: Mobile, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Vanguard, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, allowing the player to choose how the gun is fired.

Call of Duty and United Offensive[]

The fire mode can be toggled on default by pressing the N key on PC or by pressing stick on consoles. The player has complete freedom on whether or not it is used as it doesn't have to be used at any point in the game. There are two variants of this:

Semi-auto/Full-auto[]

The two basically do as the title suggests, Single Fire stops the gun from being fired fully automatically which can help save ammo due to recoil having a smaller impact and prevents ammo burning. It is the most common version found on guns. Overall this is better for long range though should be avoided in close battles. Likewise, Full-Auto mode makes the gun fully-automatic but in turn can waste ammo. Guns that use it are:

  • FG42 (Semi-auto increases hipfire accuracy)
  • MP44
  • PPSh (Full-auto reduces melee time)
  • Thompson (Semi-auto decreases hipfire accuracy)

Slow-auto/Fast-auto[]

Found only on the BAR, rather than making the gun semi-automatic, this instead reduces the rate of fire. Whilst reducing its overall DPS, it helps save ammo with more accuracy and lower recoil.

Call of Duty: Mobile[]

In Call of Duty: Mobile, the fire mode function is exclusive to Battle Royale. When equipped with the Legendary version of the Sniper Expert weapon mod, the semi-automatic sniper rifles and marksman rifles can be fired continuously when holding down the fire button, and the player can toggle between this and the standard semi-auto mode.

Previously, the fire mode feature was also available to other weapons in Battle Royale: assault rifles, most light machine guns, most submachine guns, some pistols, and the Echo shotgun. A couple of assault rifles also had the selective fire function in the Undead Siege Zombies mode. Following the Season 8: 2nd Anniversary update, these weapons no longer have a fire mode option.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare[]

The selective fire function appears in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone. It is available on assault rifles (except the FAL, CR-56 AMAX and AS VAL), on the submachine guns, and on the SA87, MG34, Holger-26 and RAAL MG light machine guns.

The feature is fully present in multiplayer, Special Ops and Warzone. In campaign however, it is only available on a few weapons, notably the player's starting M4A1 in the mission Fog of War. Some versions of the FR 5.56 and FAL can also be found with a select-fire function in the campaign. The FAL is unique in that aspect, being able to toggle to fully-automatic mode, which is not possible for its counterpart in other game modes.

Call of Duty: Vanguard[]

The select-fire feature returns in Call of Duty: Vanguard. It is available on assault rifles (excluding the KG M40, Nikita AVT, Vargo-S and EX1), on submachine guns (excluding the MP-40, Type 100, H4 Blixen and RA 225), and on the Bren and Lienna 57 light machine guns.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II[]

Select-fire reappears in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. It is present on assault rifles, battle rifles, submachine guns (except the PDSW 528), and light machine guns (except the SAKIN MG38 and RPK).

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III[]

Select-fire reappears in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. In addition to the returning weapons from Modern Warfare II, it is available on the new assault rifles, battle rifles, submachine guns, and light machine guns (except the Pulemyot 762 and Bruen Mk9).

Trivia[]

  • In Call of Duty 2, in iw_06.iwd , there is a sound file called Alt_Fire_Switch.mp3 This could possibly mean a fire mode switch was planned but canceled.
