Simply put, I think it'd be a nice idea to be able to add animated images to article gallery sections. Images like reload animations, deployment animations, etc. would improve quality of pages since we're getting a clearer representation of an action that wouldn't necessarily be accessible from a still image frame -- also it's nice to see an action in motion.

For example, we could put this image on the Gunsmith page (gif by me):

http://i.imgur.com/vXjKOGG.gif

This shows quickly and clearly a varied example of what gunsmith is and how it looks in-game. It would also look nice on the Man-O-War page since it shows off a bunch of the aesthetic options available on the gun in one image.

I understand that loading gifs on pages might cause trouble for some users with slower internet connections; though, I believe we're at a time where that group of persons is too small to cause too much of an inconvenience. Of course we don't need something like a tumblr gifset on our articles, I just think things like the image above add more pizzazz to our pages and could even open up more opportunities for users to contribute content that requires a bit more effort than just taking a screenshot. And this wouldn't really fall under personal edits since it's essentially a series of screenshots.

Especially with reload animations -- I think gifs would really increase character and sorta modernize the wiki in a way, since we'd be one of the few wikis I've come across to have gifs on articles.

If the .gifs are clear and informative, I can't see why not. I think HTML5 video would be even better since they allow for far smaller file sizes.  FANMADE_Animated_Derpy_Hooves_desktop_ponies_sprite.gif Sig1.png Sig2.png  22:56, June 17, 2015 (UTC)

We could also use gfycat and then hack in the JS they provide to view them. Again, much lower file sizes... but then the images would be hosted off-site.  FANMADE_Animated_Derpy_Hooves_desktop_ponies_sprite.gif Sig1.png Sig2.png  22:58, June 17, 2015 (UTC)
I just put gif since to most people that just means "it's animated," and yeah it would probably be better to host our own images. The only thing is I don't know how to do html5 videos since I just use GifCam to make my gifs. I guess if others know how it would be a great thing, though. http://i.imgur.com/TLfINDf.gif This username better work http://i.imgur.com/TLfINDf.gif 23:25, June 17, 2015 (UTC)

I especially like the idea of using .gifs to portray reload animations. Although, I weep for Anti.. Omnipedia Logo No Text BO3 exacri 23:35, June 17, 2015 (UTC)

Honestly, I do kinda agree that animated images would be better than what we have right now. With the current reload images, you only see one frame of the reload, but a gif/gifv would show the entire thing. Surely we wouldn't get the nice transparent image and we would potentially have to replace hundreds of images if we do decide to change, but I guess its okay if if benefits the wiki. Also on another subject, we could potentially use this to add recoil videos to our articles. http://i.imgur.com/4XBy83R.pngAntiScootaTwotalk  23:42, June 17, 2015 (UTC)
Honestly, we could make anything into a gif. http://i.imgur.com/TLfINDf.gif This username better work http://i.imgur.com/TLfINDf.gif 23:51, June 17, 2015 (UTC)

Great idea. Also, good gif. http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/276/1/2/bionicle__unity_duty_destiny_by_cyberpictures-d6p3li2.pngLegos-Rule-15 Talk 04:54, June 18, 2015 (UTC)

Sounds good. I also like Cod4's proposal of using HTML5. APNG could also work but it's currently not supported by default in some browsers such as Chrome, or at all on IE. -- laagone (talk)  06:34, June 18, 2015 (UTC)

Seems like a good idea. Doing the reload/deployment animations for weapons shouldn't lag up a page too bad for users with a bit slower of an internet anyway. But what about knifing animations? Should we keep those how the currently are, since they're so fast, or make them into a gif too? Conqueror of all Zombies (talk) 07:18, June 18, 2015 (UTC)

Knifing animations take up a few frames at best. It's probably best if we include them. Omnipedia Logo No Text BO3 exacri 07:39, June 18, 2015 (UTC)

I'm all for this. There's a lot of applications we could use for this. Some of these could replace videos on certain weapon pages. Personal MLGisNot4Me DragonbornDremYolLok  08:14, June 18, 2015 (UTC)

Taking Cod4's recommendation on using Gfycat, I decided to make a few test videos just to see what applications these files could fill. So far I got test videos for weapon swap, recoil, reload, and dry reload. If we were to put all four of these on a page in standard gif format, it would most likely cause long loading times. I'd say our best bet is to find a way to incorporate HTML5/GFY into the wiki as Cod4 said. http://i.imgur.com/4XBy83R.pngAntiScootaTwotalk  01:48, June 25, 2015 (UTC)

They're definitely higher quality than gif images, and less than half the file size. I captured the gfy and turned it into a gif ; which came out at just a little over 3MB while the gfy image is only 1MB, higher quality, and can be resized as needed. So if we could find a way to embed gfy's unto the wiki, gfy would be the better choice. http://i.imgur.com/TLfINDf.gif This username better work http://i.imgur.com/TLfINDf.gif 15:20, July 1, 2015 (UTC)
Wikia nor imgur support .webms at this time. Omnipedia Logo No Text BO3 exacri 16:04, July 1, 2015 (UTC)
Imgur does have gifv's though. (Those also work on mobile as well) http://i.imgur.com/TLfINDf.gif This username better work http://i.imgur.com/TLfINDf.gif 18:12, July 1, 2015 (UTC)
Closed - Forum is dead. There is currently no rules regarding using gifs on pages, so there is nothing to change or vote on. 15:39, August 3, 2015 (UTC)
