Image maintenance project
this wiki
Forum page
Hello all,
I want to propose for us to kick off an image renaming project. It's as simple as that, a project for users to take part in which consists of simply renaming any misnamed files you can find.
This is going to be over several months, so there is no rush or deadline that we need to be "finished" by.
Why should we do this? There are thousands of files with improper names. Renaming them would greatly improve the organization of our many images.
Currently only admins and custodians can move images (and suppress the redirects, which is important). So any user who is very interested in helping and has a reasonable amount of experience will be given the custodian rights if they do not have them already. We could also make one or two awards for users who contribute greatly to this project. Users can also be added to Sactage's IRC bot's privilege list so that they can use the bot to move/delete images if needed.
So do people want to do this? I think it would be a good group effort which would have noticeable results.
Discuss below please!

- Note: For the users who currently do not have custodian, and wish to help, add {{Smove|your reason}} on the page (The idea was KATANAGOD's). If we decide to go through with this (probably will), this way you can say you have experience when you request custodian rights for the project.

- Note: If any unused templates are found, please slap {{sdelete}} on them. Thanks!

I wanna help out, so I put my proposal on the TIG requests page, or here? Sure, AJ'll help. I've already started posting {{Smove}} templates on files. -- It appears there is a lot of work to do. Great we've finally started doing something with these images. Helping. I'll likely be nub and delete a few images in the process by accident, but I'll give it a shot anyway. I need Custodian though.

A proposition
Edit
Assuming we're doing this (since at least I've started already with a few images), I think custodians should be able to edit all pages to be able to replace the filename on blogs, archives and comments. There are plenty of those images, and I think it'd be better to not only let admins take care of them.
The problem some may see is that it'd be too much power. However, a solution could be to take that ability away after the project is considered done, or that custodians must not use the ability to do anything else than replace filenames. What do you think? -
MLGISNOT4ME [Talk] - 10:45, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
- Since Custodians are supposed to be trusted user, I doubt any of us would try to edit something other than an image on a Blog. To be safe however, is it possible to make an Abuse filter to prevent changing the text, but not the images? It sounds complex I know.

- I don't know how Wikia would react if we asked them to modify the user group right temporarily. -- Sactage (talk) 13:28, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
- I don't see why they would have any issue with it.

Idea for additional Project

I had an idea recently of a complete image overhaul project. Similar to other Overhaul Projects we have had previously, it would be a focused effort to clean up the Filespace in numerous ways:
Obviously some tasks would need to be done by an administrator (#2), or custodian, but the whole wiki could help in some way. The usual ribbons/awards could be made up and distributed accordingly. Thoughts? elmo's
Hierarchy is perfect.
I also favor this system. Shotrocket6 01:55, April 9, 2012 (UTC) What about unused templates? D:< --
How about we start a general wiki overhaul project? That would please everyone. elmo's
Also, for people who want to help out, go crazy. With all this talk of unused templates, I agree with Sam on this one, we should keep this a image related project, the unused templates of this wiki are few and far between, because most of these templates are used, just not being used at the moment. :| Redskin-26 23:04, April 9, 2012 (UTC)
I just wanna ask a quick question. The Pack a Punched weapons in WaW and BO, would they be name as they are in their Pack a Punched form, or like M1 Garand Pack a Punched?
Another quick question, for weapons that are named differently in different games, how should they be named? For instance the Arisaka is named like that in WaW, but according to the page (for i never played WaWFF), it said that it is named Type 99. So how should the images be named? Then what ever answer that we come up with we can apply this to other guns that fall under this.

Edit
Okay, so now that this has all been discussed, I think we need to do more with images than just renaming, we need to also make sure they are properly licensed, and make sure all unused/unneeded files are removed. Redundant images should be tagged for deletion and removed as well - this includes images such as several images for the cocking of a single gun.
So to make this easier, Crazy sam came up with an image hierarchy which we will be using to rename weapon images. The hierarchy goes like so:
- [Weapon] [Attachment/SOPMOD, Grenadier, etc.] [Action being depicted] [Camo] [3rd person/pick up/HUD/Menu icon] [Game].[file extention]
- Per some examples:
- G36C Red Dot Sight MW3.png
- G36C Red Tiger CoD4.png
- G36C Iron Sights Red Tiger CoD4.png
- G36C Dual Mags reload MW3.png
- G36C Red Dot Sight pickup MW2.png
- G36C Red Dot Sight Blue Tiger 3rd person MW2.png
- L86 LSW Grenadier pickup MW2.png
Please note however that the priority is to rename images with improper names, mark unused/unnecessary images for deletion, and make sure things are properly licensed.
Sactage's bot is currently ready to help in image maintenance. It has a few commands which do things to images. A documentation of the commands is found here.
Please post your name below if you plan on helping out with this project and you need custodian rights. They will be added over the coming days.

Needed images project
Edit
Merged from other forum
This project runs on the same grounds as the Image Renaming Project: there is no set amount of time which this has to be finished by, so it’ll go on for months.
We should do this because the attachment and camouflage templates need a significant increase in standard. As stated before, most of the gallery pages on the templates have no images, so how are they to just remain in that state?
Argo doesn’t have GIMP (the actual thing), while my Macbook can’t run it. So I think it would be greatly beneficial if this was a community project instead of a small-group kind of effort.
So do you all want to start this project? It’d have tremendous and significant results. Discuss please!

Image Categorization Extension
Edit
| Discussion |
|---|
|
Hello all. I want present to you an extension to the Project, dealing with Image Categorization. It would work like this: There will be subcategories, and specific ones, at that. We will have try and cover everything, from Personal Image to in-game images. For the Personal Images, there would be the category for that, and for the in-game images, there would be more specifics. We would cover Vehicles, Weapons, Characters, Factions, and Levels. Now, I decided this should be nice and structured, so I thought we could have a group of 1-3 people working on an category, so let's say 3 people working on the Personal images. Also, If a person finishes up their work in a group, they can go to another group, but it has to be the one with the most work still needed. Now, if you don't have a basic idea of what the category would be for...let's say..a Weapon for CoD4, it would look like this: "Category:Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Weapon Images". That is all I have to say. Discuss below please. 00:00, June 22, 2012 (UTC) Image categorisation is something we've neglected to do basically forever. It's useful and allows for a higher integrity of categorisation. I'd be up to doing this fully. This'll be amazingly helpful. I can get my bot to categorize everything if all the images are properly named. And I mean PROPERLY named. Everyone should take the time and start naming images to the correct filenames so i can start mass categorizing images with my lovely maiden. I think this is a great idea, and I'd love to help! Jsflaherty TALK I'm up for it. So how are the groups gonna be sorted out? ParagonX7 跟我谈天 Yes please. Images at the moment are organized terribly. More organization is much better for the Wiki. This will be good. I'm down for this. Addendum

Compilation
Edit
This is IMPORTANT - please read. After more than a week of this being open to discussion, it is now time for us to begin this part of the project.
Image categorisation will be quite simple. It will follow the path shown on this chart (important to read). Boxes which are green on that chart are categories which individual files can go into. Boxes which are red are categories which individual files cannot go into.
Examples:
- File:Picking_up_Javelin_missile_The_Bog_CoD4.jpg Would go into Category:The Bog images
- File:Mini-Uzi CoD4.png would go into :Category:Mini-Uzi (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare) images
- File:Captain Price CoD4.jpg would go into :Category:John Price (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare) images
- File:Mi-24 MW.jpg would go into :Category:Mi-24 Hind (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare) images
- File:Massey.jpg would go into :Category:Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare minor characters images see note 4
-
- File:Nobodycares.jpg would go into Category:Personal images
Notes:
- Be sensible when it comes to doing this. Just because an M16A4 might appear somewhere in an image does not mean it should be categorised as an image of an M16A4. Only categorise based on the focus of an image.
- Don't just adhere to the chart's categories. The chart is there to show the structure of the categories and to have some examples. Things like images of multiplayer factions could go in their own categories too, like "Category:Marine Raiders images".
- Some images like File:Nuketown_2025_Poster.jpg may be difficult to categorise. If you're not sure of what to categorise an image as, simply leave it.
- Some things might not have enough images to warrant individual categories, and instead have enough images to warrant a group category. This is especially the case with minor characters as shown in the example above. Use your own discretion with this. Don't make categories with only one or two images.
This is a very long and time-consuming project but it will benefit the wiki a lot as file organisation is important - these categories will allow us to organise files farther, and if done in the style of the chart, will be done properly.

Further discussion/questions
Edit
The categories fit just right. "Category:Personal images" seems too general though, but I don't think there's any other way besides doing something like "Category:DarkMetroid567 Personal images" which doesn't sound like a very good idea.

We need a place to put images that are hard to categorize, so we dont loose them in the massive ammount of files we have. Perhaps a section below?![]()

Wanted photos extension
Edit
Hi all, I am proposing yet another extension to this project. While I already have done extensive work on this by myself, Special:Wantedfiles is the most neglected Special:Wanted page, and one user simply can't handle hundreds of redlinks by him/herself. Therefore, I am proposing for some users to shift some attention to this. Thoughts? PierogiTalk 01:50, June 23, 2012 (UTC)
Fully support this idea, anything to clear redlinks/wanted pages. This would lead to a reduction in the amount of deadlinked images which can only help.

More awards
Edit
Well, because there's so much to be done with this project, it would probably be best to have more than 1 award. For the 2011 general cleanup project, we had 2 awards, so we should at least have 2 awards for this one (a standard award and another one for those who went above and beyond the call of duty). But we could also have some other awards too, like those for users who contributed exceptionally to the renaming of images, and those who contributed exceptionally to categorisation etc.
Just a word of note - earlier I gave out some awards for this project. However this does not signify the end of the project. We still have a lot to do.
What do you think?

So is this discussion over? The project and it's additions are all in full swing and the forum has remained mainly inactive for a long while. There seems to be nothing else to discuss. DarkMetroid567Talk 03:51, August 18, 2012 (UTC)
Request for closure - This thread really needs to be archived. Everything it wanted to implement should be implemented or in the process (It has been half a year!). Either way, this forum has been at the bottom of the War Room for a while now, so clearly it has fulfilled its purpose as a discussion area. 222 talk 10:59, October 11, 2012 (UTC)
- I don't have a problem with closing it now. The project is not finished (not necessarily will ever be since more and more images get uploaded every day) but its implementation is complete. It's hard to believe it's been 6 months already if you ask me.

- As Cod4 has said, this project is still in effect. There are multiple more images that still need to be renamed, categorised and improved. Perhaps if you were helping with this project you'd know this. 12:39, October 11, 2012 (UTC)
- Sam, perhaps you missed "in the process". Please read properly before implying I have less of a right to request closure because I am not personally involved in a project. 222 talk 01:21, October 13, 2012 (UTC)
- And I said the project is still "in effect", so the forum stays open, not that you had less of a right. And in response to you claiming you are not personaly involved, you have little to no edits in the file space helping us achieve this goal. 01:35, October 13, 2012 (UTC)
- To add on, you're basing this purely on timescale, yet many of the users involved are still doing many of the main parts of this forum, such as renaming images on pages and categorising personal images. 01:43, October 13, 2012 (UTC)
- I fail to see how "claiming" I am not personally involved is contradicted by the fact that I have no edits in the filespace. Again, I fail to see how the fact I am not involved, and have little edits in the File: namespace dilutes my position that the thread has fulfilled its purpose as a discussion area. I'm sure that we have had numerous forums on counter-vandalism, should we keep those open as well? Since we are constantly reverting vandalism throughout the wiki. My position is that threads are for discussing and finding consensus for/against projects, and getting them off the ground. This thread has clearly achieved both goals. I see no reason why you have the need to attack my inactivity in the File: namespace and my lack of involvement in this particular project, both which have nothing to do with this request for closure (but are obviously true of course) and seems more like an ad hominem argument to oppose my request. 222 talk 02:00, October 13, 2012 (UTC)

- Yes it is not over yet, but just taking a peak at recent uploads, the overall flow is that images are being licenced correctly and most of the older images are named and licenced correctly. I say we close it, we can always just slap another one here need be.

New issue
Edit
I'd like to raise an issue we currently have. Please make sure that icons are being correctly differentiated. This is incredibly important, esspecially in the case of some images, such as Danger Close images, as Danger Close is a multitude of different things, 2 achievement images, a perk and a wildcard, however the achievement image is simply called "Danger Close MW2". We need to ensure we're being as specific as possible here, as such we need to ensure we're including "Perk icon", "Wildcard icon" or "Achievement icon". Also while PS3 calls them "Trophies" I feel it is easier to call them "Achievement icons" as the act of doing them is an achievement rather than the reward of a trophy. 11:43, November 23, 2012 (UTC)
Closed - Everything has been sorted out, and any new image related problems can be brought up in a new forum. Keeping this in the War Room just makes it look clogged.
22:10, December 27, 2012 (UTC)
- It's an on-going project, any issues about will be brought up in this one, not a new forum. 17:27, January 3, 2013 (UTC)
