Forums: Index Watercooler Questions Regarding the CoD Timeline

Greetings, readers.

I have a couple questions regarding the nature of the Call of Duty timeline, and I would like to ask them in this post. First, here is what I believe to be the Call of Duty timeline, with information courtesy of Wikipedia and this wiki (If there is a slash between the titles of 2 games, then that means they are set concurrently. Ghosts and Advanced Warfare are omitted because they contradict canon):

  • Call of Duty/Finest Hour/2/Big Red One/3/World at War (1942 - 1945)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Mobile (1967)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops/Call of Duty: Black Ops DS (1968)
  • Rightful King (1973)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified (1975-1979)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops II (1986-1989) (80s thread)
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2011) (Mobile)
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered (2011)
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2/Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Mobilized (2016)
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: Defiance (around the same time as MW2's final missions, 2 or 3 days leading up to MW3)
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2016, shortly after MW2)
  • Call of Duty: Strike Team (2020)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops II (2025, 2020s thread)
  • V.E.R.S.I.O.N. (2037, Singapore thread)
  • V.E.R.S.I.O.N. (2063, Zurich thread)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops III (2065)
  • Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (presumably long after BO3)

My 3 primary questions are:

  1. Where is Call of Duty Online in the timeline?
  2. Can the different story arcs (WWII, Modern Warfare, Black Ops, Infinite Warfare) really be reconciled like I have?
  3. Is there any material or any games I am missing?

1. Online is placed around MW-MW2ish.
2. I'm assuming you didn't place AW on the timeline because it condradicts Blops 3. The reason this happens is because the three main developers consider their own seperate games in different canons, and as such, there isn't a single overarching story, or, in other words, they're just a bunch of series set at different times periods.
3. I'm pretty sure you got every game. It might be interesting to create a timeline including cancelled games, but we haven't exactly got a tonne of information about their specifics.

2. I understand that the games mght contradict each other because they are made by different companies that consider them in seperate canons, but do you think that, if we assume that they really all are set in the same universe (except for Ghosts and Advanced Warfare, again), are there any other problems or contradictions in my timeline?
3. About the cancelled games: Combined Forces and Devil's Brigade would be jumbled in with the WWII games, and Call of Duty: Vietnam would be happening concurrently with Black Ops (Mobile), Black Ops/Black Ops DS, and the beginning of Black Ops: Declassified. Roman Wars would be the first installment in the series chronologically, being set in Ancient Rome during the reign of Julius Caesar.

If we assume they're all in the same timeline, I guess it could work. I mean, currently, I don't see any condratictions/loopholes in it, so I think you're ok. Also, just wondering, but what does "V.E.R.S.I.O.N." mean? I'm guessing it's a thing from Bo3, which I haven't played, but I just want to be sure. Capt. MillerTalk 08:38, August 14, 2016 (UTC)
VERSION is a short story written before the release of BO3 to give us some insight about the world in the game. There's a contradiction in this timeline: the WW3 in MW2 and MW3, it didn't happen in the BO timeline (neither in Ghosts nor Advanced Warfare timeline). I don't think we should consider all the games in the same univers/timeline. Kalinine (talk) 09:01, August 14, 2016 (UTC)
I'm fairly certain that it's stated that all the games have different timelines and canons. The only mild exception is World War 2, but that's just because it's based on a real event. Even then the stories that each game puts in to WW2 is separate to the other CoDs. 14:44, August 14, 2016 (UTC)

It's pretty obvious that the different subseries are in different timelines. I mean, they all are drastically different from one another in tone and events. We even have all the timelines neatly organized right here. I don't really know why you'd think that every game is in the same timeline TBH. But, to answer your questions:

  1. Online is in its own timeline/not in one and just pulls from past games for content.
  2. No, since they're all in their own universes.
  3. You've missed stuff like the Ghost comic, Find Makarov: Operation Kingfish and books like Rightful King and Devil's Breath and Call of Duty: Roads to Victory. Conqueror of all Zombies (talk) 04:23, August 15, 2016 (UTC)
