"As their journey nears its end, our heroes must battle ancient beasts in the war torn ruins of Stalingrad..."
— Mission Briefing

Gorod Krovi (Russian: Город Крови; English: City of Blood) is a Zombies map for Call of Duty: Black Ops III, released on July 12, 2016 for the Playstation 4, and released on August 11th for the Xbox One and PC, and is part of the Descent DLC map pack. It features the return of the Origins crew as they set out to kill the original Nikolai Belinski and preserve his soul in the Summoning Key.

Features[]

Gorod Krovi contains numerous new and returning features to the Zombies mode.

  • The most obvious new element is the inclusion of Dragons in the map. The dragon functions in a similar manner to the Giant Robots seen in Origins, where it will temporarily block off an area by breathing fire on it, which can kill the player if they stand in it for too long. The fire does not kill zombies, instead turning them into Napalm Zombies.
  • Players can safely walk through the dragon's fire with the use of the Guard of Fafnir, which is an update to the Zombie Shield. It must be held in front of the user (putting away the player's other weapons while held) in order to be immune to the flames. This shield also features a fireball attack in addition to normal melee. It can optionally be upgraded into the Tiamat's Maw, featuring significantly increased durability and stronger fireballs.
  • The Dragon Strike is a Wonder Weapon that functions similarly to the G-Strike from Origins. It can optionally be upgraded into the Draconite Controller, which has a larger radius and more damage.
  • A specific red dragon can also be ridden to the Hatchery where Pack-a-Punch if the player completes the challenges needed for it. See the requirements for building the Dragon Network Controller and obtaining the Dragon Wings, which enhances the former, and gives players resistance to fire/explosive damage.
  • The Gauntlet of Siegfried is a new Specialist Wonder Weapon featuring a dragon Whelp and iron gauntlet, both of which can be used in combat. It requires the player to incubate a Dragon Egg to obtain.
  • The Electro-Shock Defenses return from previous maps, as well as the addition of three new traps, the Gigant Eye Beam Trap, the Flinger Traps and the Gigant Finger Trap, which are located in certain areas in the map, as well as a mounted MG42 at the Hatchery.
  • The Bridge is a new utility which can be used by the player to quickly move between certain areas of the map.
  • New weapons have been added to the Mystery Box, such as the PPSh-41, NX ShadowClaw, L4 Siege, FFAR, and a new duel wielded wonder weapon, the GKZ-45 Mk3, which is a combination of the GKZ-45 and the new Ray Gun Mark III.
  • Monkey Bombs can optionally be upgraded in this map if obtained from the Mystery Box.
  • Trials from Zetsubou no Shima make a return, although completing them all is no longer necessary. Only the bottom most Trial is required for the Easter Egg.
  • Time Trials also exist for optional secret melee weapons with increasing effectiveness even beyond typical ones. Doing only the highest tier is needed for the achievement Time Attack (players can fail previous tiers but succeed on the final for the achievement). Be warned however, that unlike the Knife or Bowie Knife, all weapons awarded through these actually replace/take up a weapon slot, which can be seen as undesirable over time, at least without Mule Kick. Additionally, they take long enough to perform/are tight enough on time that they generally aren't recommended if one is attempting the Easter Egg, as these are more an available option for playing for high rounds.

The map also features a couple of new enemies for the player to combat.

The Origins characters return as well as Nikolai Belinski from the original timeline, who will be less willing to cooperate with the Origin's crew. Anton Gersh and Sophia return from previous maps as well, and Dr. Monty is also heard for the first time, appearing as an ally to the Origins characters.

Story Easter Egg[]

Main article: Love and War

The story based Easter Egg for Gorod Krovi is Love and War, centered around locating the Nikolai Belinski of the Agonia Fracture and securing his soul within the Battle of Stalingrad.

Weaponry Easter Egg[]

  • There is an upgrade quest for the Monkey Bomb. After killing 50 zombies with it, a zombie will drop a Flask. Each player will need to pick up a specific flower vase and a candle that needs to be lit up using Guard of Fafnir. Once the two items are collected, each player must return to the grave challenge board and find their respective grave. Throwing a Monkey Bomb to the grave will create a green flame. After interacting with the flame, the upgraded Monkey Bomb will rise from the grave to be collected.

Music Easter Eggs[]

  • There are three musical Easter Eggs with a total of four different triggers:
    • "Dead Ended" by Clark S. Nova, the official Easter Egg song of the map, which is activated by holding the "use" button on three vodka bottles across the map.[1]
      • The first bottle is on a couch in the Department Store, right after the first buyable door.
      • The second is between the Department Store and the Operations Bunker, on the floor near a crashed truck alongside some corpses and rubble.
      • The third bottle is in the Supply Depot, on a shelf next to a crate with a white Iron Cross.
    • A re-recorded version of Ace of Spades by Motörhead, which is activated by interacting with three literal ace of spades playing cards across the map.[2] It can also be activated during the boss fight by shooting the three telephone poles that are emitting an electrical current with an explosive.
      • The first card is on the bottom left corner of a blackboard in the same room as Double Tap 2.0 in the Tank Factory.
      • The second card is on Sophia's desk in the Dragon Command Center.
      • The third card is in the Hatchery to the right of the Pack-A-Punch machine, on a desk, wedged in a book.
    • "Samantha's Sorrow" by Brian Tuey, which can be activated by completing a hide and seek mini game. To activate the game, the player must throw Monkey Bombs into three different areas being set on fire by the Dragons. This will cause a Samantha doll to spawn in front of the tombstone by the challenge boards in Belinski Square. Hold the "use" button on the doll to make it disappear in a green mist and start the mini game. Five Samantha dolls will be hidden around the map in randomized locations. They will be playing the Der Eisendrache version of Samantha's Lullaby to indicate their location. Once one is shot, it will disappear in a green mist similar to the first doll and another one will appear. This must be done in a limited amount of time or the player will hear Samantha laugh similar to when the Mystery Box moves and the process will reset. When the game is lost, the currently spawned Samantha doll will disappear in a green mist, so the player can keep track of potential spawns. The player can restart the mini game by holding square on the grave again. When the mini game is done, go back to the tombstone; another Samantha doll will appear, which will be dragged into the grave by a skeleton hand when the player holds the "use" button. A Max Ammo drop will appear in its location and the song will start playing.[3]

Sheets[]

There are several music sheets showing the notes of a song by the name of "Revelations" resting on pianos around the map, although the song itself is not heard in the map.

Letter[]

There is a letter, which can be found in the map, that reads:

"General Lehmkuhl,

The dragons continue to bring success in the Eastern front. Russian resistance is fierce but we are maintaining a stronghold in Stalingrad. There are rumors of a new push to retake the city, but I am confident it will be stopped. The Hatchery continues to experiment with ways to enhance the beasts even further. Group 935 will not be technologically outpaced by the Russians.

Die Glocke research continues to inspire new theories of time displacement and possibly even movement across dimensions. Security has been enhanced, especially after the disaster that was enabled by Doctor Groph’s lax security measures. We have taken steps to ensure that none of this technology falls into enemy hands.

However, I feel I must protest the behavior of this insufferable apparatus that we have been forced to contend with. Sophia, as IT likes to be called, has demanded that we change the password to an encrypted cipher consisting entirely of unintelligible characters for maximum security. The current method is sufficiently secure without getting in the way of researchers performing their duties. Even if someone were able to obtain one of the special code cylinders, they would still need to know the password. While it is possible it could be guessed, it is easy for our researchers to remember due to its association to our Die Glocke research. Still, I feel it is sufficiently obscure that no one should be able to guess it easily.

Respectfully yours,

Harvey Yena, Sc.D."

A shot of a darkened sky can be seen as a massive portal opens up, as Primis and several debris are seen being shot down from the portal, meanwhile proximity rounds from anti-aircraft guns fire at Primis plunging rapidly towards the ground as Motörhead's Ace of Spades begins to play.

Takeo: THIS was part of your plan, Richtofen?!

Richtofen: Not exactly!

Below the four is a soldier falling down with them with a parachute equipped on his back.

Dempsey: There! He's got a parachute!

The camera views on the soldier, who bears a name tag reading McCain. Dempsey then leans forwards as he pursues McCain. Dempsey eventually tackles McCain as the others soon catch up to the two. The others then grab ahold of McCain.

Nikolai: Pull the reserve!

Dempsey manages to pull the reserve on McCain's parachute, opening up the parachute. As Nikolai looks below him, a loud screech can be heard as a dragon zooms up past them before flying past them and towards Stalingrad below, where a mech on the ground begins to open fire at the dragon. Inside the cockpit is Ultimis Nikolai Belinski, who is drinking a bottle of vodka as he opens fire on several zombies attacking his mech. Ultimis Nikolai's mech then jumps on several zombies before he draws his attention to the dragon again. He begins to shoot rockets towards the dragon as it flies behind him. Ultimis Nikolai begins to drink again as Primis then parachute in front of him. Ultimis Nikolai then notices the four and begins to open fire on the four as they dive for cover. Suddenly, the dragon then picks up Ultimis Nikolai's mech and throws him into a building. Primis then look at the carnage before running as the dragon then breaths fire at the camera, ending the scene.

Primis Nikolai walks up to the destroyed mech, which contains his Ultimis self. He pumps his KRM-262 as the Ultimis Nikolai is drinking vodka.

Ultimis Nikolai: You think you will kill me now?!

Primis Nikolai: I am sorry, Nikolai. I wish... I wish there was another way. But know this... In my heart, I share the same pain as you.

Ultimis Nikolai keeps drinking until his bottle is snatched by his Primis counterpart.

Primis Nikolai: The pain that you have buried and blurred beneath an alcohol fueled haze! Yes, the pain of your own memory!

Primis Nikolai breaks the bottle as the Ultimis Nikolai reaches to his side...

Primis Nikolai: You loved and you lost... Everything else has been delusional fantasy! That distances you from painful truth. You know what I speak of, you remember. Before the bombs fell... Before she was... Taken from us.

Ultimis Nikolai: Some things are forgotten... FOR A REASON!

Ultimis Nikolai shoots his Primis version in the chest with an MR6. However, his bulletproof vest deflects the shot.

Primis Nikolai: YARGH!

The Primis Nikolai quickly acts in self defense and shoots the Ultimis Nikolai in the head with his KRM-262, killing him immediately. The screen goes black. Richtofen is seen collecting Ultimis Nikolai's soul as Takeo comforts Primis Nikolai while Dempsey watches Richtofen.

Richtofen: It is done... The souls have been collected, Maxis! We will see you... Soon.

A portal opens in the sky, and Richtofen lights a beacon from the Summoning Key and he releases the Ultimis Nikolai, Takeo and Dempsey's souls.

The screen goes to black and the words "TO BE CONCLUDED..." appear, afterward the title Revelations comes up dramatically. The four are returned back to Belinski Square.

Monty: Okay, Nikolai... Dempsey... Takeo. I'm only talking to you right now. Richtofen, he can't hear me. See, he's probably off doing his own thing right now, anyway. No changing that, I suppose. The good news is, you're nearly done. It will soon be time to come to the House. But, this plan... this big plan - a lot of it's been riding on Richtofen. Before he caught up with you guys, he spent years traveling. Searching out just the right versions of you - the ones who held the key to closing off the other dimensions. I think you know by now exactly what that entails. Point is, he's kind of surplus to requirements these days. He's been in the House for ages... but don't tell him. Anyway, it'll all make sense when you get here, you'll see. Honestly, it's going to be fine. Oh, shit... I completely forgot to introduce myself. I'm Dr. Monty. Hello, so nice to see you all.

Trivia[]

  • The zombies now have red eyes, much like in Mob of the Dead.
  • In the spawn area of the map, what seems to be a pair of glowing white eyes can be seen down a sewage pipe. This may be a lighting glitch.
  • In the introduction, Ace of Spades by Motörhead plays on Ultimis Nikolai's radio as Primis parachute down into the area.
  • If the player noclips outside of the map and into the bottom of the clocktower by Dragon Command, the player will be able to see all of the map's paper ciphers.[4]
  • Whilst in the boss fight against Ultimis Nikolai Belinski if one listens closely, the Soviet National Anthem can be heard playing.
  • Near the four wooden headstones in the spawn area, a sign can be seen wrapped in some barbed wire that reads "Vengeance is mine! - V.R".
    • Additionally, there's a trophy/achievement called Viktorious Revenge which is misspelled intentionally with a "K" as a pun on Reznov.
  • The "To Be Concluded..." portion of the ending cutscene is not present on the PC version of the map.
  • In the spawn area of the map, a street sign named "Richard Rodriguez" can be seen from the barrier next to the Gobblegum machine. This is the name of the winner of the Call of Duty: Black Ops III "Be a Zombie" contest previously held by Activision and Treyarch in collaboration with Omaze.
