The Hypno Knife is a throwable Knife that appears in the Extinction mode of Call of Duty: Ghosts, found in a search pile on the maps Point of Contact, Nightfall, Awakening and Exodus.

The Hypno Knife can turn an enemy Cryptid (with the exception of Lepers, Seekers, the Breeder, the Kraken, the Mammoth, Gargoyles, Bombers and Ancestors) into an ally. Rhinos can be turned friendly, but only through an upgrade in the armory that costs 50 teeth. These converted Cryptids are still attracted to Flares, so it is not advised to deploy one until the hypnotized Cryptid is gone.

Once turned friendly, the hypnotized Cryptid will be highlighted to all players to indicate that it is friendly. When hypnotized, the friendly Cryptid will fight opposing Cryptids alongside the player. In this role, the friendly Crytpid will act as a great distraction, as enemy Cryptids that target the hypnotized Cryptid will not target the player unless the friendly Cryptid is killed or ceases fighting to leave the map.

If there are no Cryptids nearby, the hypnotized Cryptid will typically just follow the player(s) around aimlessly, sometimes taking very exotic paths that the player(s) normally can't take, as the hypnotized Cryptid is still able to enter parts of the map that players normally can't enter.

There can be multiple converted Cryptids fighting for the player at once, but this is dependent on the amount of knives that have been found.

When a Cryptid is taken over, money is rewarded based on the type of Cryptid it is. They are highlighted and will have a shield icon above them. They will also have a grey smoke effect, much like some of the campaign's cutscenes which include the Ghosts inside of vehicles.

Hypno Knives are very valuable to use against very difficult to kill Cryptids, as no prior damage needs to be dealt in order to hypnotize a Cryptid with the Hypno Knife. So long as the Hypno Knife lands on an eligible target, the target will instantly be turned friendly. In addition to the base cash reward still being given upon hypnotization, using a Hypno Knife on a heavy target is a great way to conserve resources, since ammo and other equipment no longer has to be used to dispatch of the enemy Cryptid.

Should the player have the necessary Armory Upgrade, a Rhino is easily the best target to hypnotize, as it is very difficult to kill on its own, gives a very large cash reward for hypnotizing it, and will be a formidable opponent against enemy Cryptids, having a significant amount of health and dealing enormous damage to them. For those without the Armory Upgrade, a Phantom would be the next best target, also having a ton of health (although not as much as the Rhino), the same large cash reward, and a similar level of power. However, Phantoms do not appear on Point of Contact. On Point of Contact, the next best target would be a Hunter. While significantly weaker than the two aforementioned Cryptids, the Hunter still has a decent amount of health and power.

The hypnotized Cryptid can be killed by other Cryptids. The hypnotized Cryptid is also on a set timer, and after a long enough period of time, the hypnotized Cryptid will simply leave the map. The Cryptid usually fights for a few minutes before deciding to leave, should it survive that long.

Hypno Knives can have their effects upgraded through Master Scavenger, which makes the hypnotized Cryptid fight for much longer before it automatically leaves. Players will know if a Hypno Knife that was used was upgraded through Master Scavenger. While normally a hypnotized ally has a blue highlight, hypnotized allies that had an upgraded Hypno Knife used on them will have a green highlight.

The Hypno Knife can be picked up if the user throws and misses it, but the window of time in which this action can be done is very tight. The Hypno Knife that's on the ground will glow brightly, and will de-spawn after a short period of time.

Trivia[]

  • If a player with the Arcing Stun armory upgrade is shooting at a Cryptid near the hypnotized Cryptid using a weapon with a stun ammunition effect, it can appear as if the hypnotized Cryptid is being hit by the Arcing Stun. However, the hypnotized Cryptid takes no damage from this.
  • Hypnotizing a Cryptid by using a Hypno Knife is considered a kill, and as such, an ammo drop for the Venom-X can be dropped by a Cryptid that was just hypnotized.
