"Grenade launcher. Fires rounds that explode on impact."
— Description.

The Kastet is a grenade launcher that appears in Call of Duty: Ghosts. It fires grenades that explode on impact.

Multiplayer[]

The Kastet is not available in the campaign, but it appears in multiplayer, and it costs three Squad Points, or can be unlocked for free by choosing the Heavy pre-set class when first creating a character.

The Kastet has the exact same damage profile of the Grenade Launcher attachment. The Kastet's grenades have a blast radius of 7.5 meters. The Kastet does 110 damage at the centre of the blast, and at the edge of the blast radius, does as little as 25 damage. The default one shot kill area for the Kastet is exceedingly small, at just 875 millimeters. The Kastet's lethality is very bad in Core game types, but the opposite is true in Hardcore, as the Kastet regularly collects one hit kills. In Core, Danger Close is almost a requirement if the user wants any semblance of one shot kill consistency. Danger Close is also very helpful in dealing with Blast Shield users, as it essentially cancels out that perk, allowing for easy two shot kills on them, or even one shot kills with some luck. If the grenade makes direct contact with the enemy, it will deal 135 damage to the target directly hit by it, which will guarantee a kill against Blast Shield users and even Ballistic Vests users, but it will not instantly kill enemies equipped in Juggernaut armor.

Like with other grenade launchers, the Kastet's grenades have a safe distance in which they will not detonate if they do not exceed the safe distance.

The Kastet's fire rate is very poor, seeing how it is a single shot weapon that needs to be reloaded after each grenade fired. The Kastet can be reloaded fairly quickly, especially with Sleight of Hand. It would also do much good for the Kastet's rate of fire to perform Reload Cancels whenever possible. Technically, the Panzerfaust reloads faster, but as the Panzerfaust needs to endure a lengthy aim down sight process before it can be fired, the Kastet has a faster overall fire rate than the Panzerfaust.

The Kastet's biggest asset over other launchers is its superior handling. It allows users to move at 95% of the base movement speed, which is the best among the launchers. It also doesn't need to aim down the sight in order to be fired, allowing for precise shots to be made while moving quickly. The Kastet can technically be aimed in a similar manner to the Chain SAW in which the crosshair tightens, but it does not have any significant effect on accuracy, while also being a process that takes time to perform and forces the user into the much slower strafe speed of just 38%, and the innate zoom level of the Kastet when aiming it is very low, so the aim down sight function on the Kastet often serves no beneficial purpose.

The Kastet spawns in with two grenades total, and it is not possible to increase this amount. It's also not possible to regain ammo for the Kastet without collecting the ammo of another Kastet off of the ground.

Despite being the cheapest launcher available, the Kastet is the most popular launcher in Multiplayer by a significant margin. Compared to its peers, the Kastet is very simple to use and is not bogged down by handling characteristics that plague so many launchers. It is a common sight on explosive-centric loadouts due to its ease of use and similar playstyle to the Grenade Launcher attachment, with it being a natural and common pairing for it. The Kastet's lacking reliability without Danger Close limits its ability to be used on non-explosive oriented classes greatly outside of Hardcore, and as such, it is mostly seen being used by players specializing in explosives.

Extinction[]

The Kastet also appears in Extinction. It costs $2000 in Point of Contact and Mayday, but $1500 in Nightfall and Awakening. In Point of Contact, it is located on a roof in the city. In Nightfall, it is leaning on the security station at the entrance area, near the hive straight ahead from the starting area. In Mayday, it is behind a potential hive in the middle of the cargo area. Compared to the Panzerfaust, the Kastet is generally the better choice, as it does not need to aim down the sight before firing, thus allowing a far faster maximum fire rate, as well as having superior move speed and reload speeds.

Much like with the Panzerfaust, the Kastet needs to be resupplied through the use of Team Explosives, and receives no ammo from traditional ammo crate drops, lest the player buy additional ammo from the Kastet buy location directly. Because the player is forced to use Team Explosives in order to resupply the weapon, it is completely unviable in solo play since it means the player has to pass up on Armor in order to use the Kastet to its full potential, and Team Explosives is not commonly used outside of new players who don't have the luxury of choice in their team support slot. In co-op, the player can usually rely on a teammate providing armor to the team, so the Kastet is much safer to use in co-op play where the player is much more comfortable providing their own ammo for the Kastet while also supporting the team with a supply of lethal slot items. It is most ideally used by an Engineer so as to maximize the per shot explosive damage of the Kastet. The Weapon Specialist also assists Kastet usage by allowing for faster reloads. For ideal Kastet usage, Weapon Specialist and Engineer should be combined by using Double Class. Despite this, the Kastet, like with the Panzerfaust, does not gain a bottomless clip when using the Weapon Specialist Upgrade outside of Chaos Mode, as the Kastet will always need to reload after every shot during the upgrade's duration. Only in Chaos Mode does the Weapon Specialist Upgrade provide a bottomless clip for the Kastet.

The Kastet is among the worst weapons in the game to search with, as the Kastet has no ability to restrict special ammo types the search pile can return, oftentimes causing search piles to give detrimental or pointless returns. Any attachment can also be found while searching with the Kastet, so it has no utility as a means to more easily find ARKs or Extended Mags, unlike some other weapons.

Due to the Kastet's lacking performance, the additional team support required to enable the Kastet to be used properly, the necessity of using Engineer and Weapon Specialist to get the most out of the Kastet, and the lack of any challenges involving a launcher, the Kastet is among the least used weapons in Extinction, alongside the Panzerfaust. The Kastet's inability to mount any attachments also makes the Kastet dangerous to buy, even on accident, as buying the Kastet to replace another weapon means all attachments on the previous weapon are lost, even if the buyer has Keep Valid Attachments active. In matches with veteran players, the Kastet is never purchased, and even among very inexperienced players, the Kastet is rarely used.

Trivia[]

  • Kastet (Кастет) is Russian for "knuckles".
  • Despite the presence of leaf sights, they are not used when ADS. Instead, like the MK32, the launcher is brought slightly closer to the middle of the screen and the hipfire reticle is tightened.
