Kiska

From the Call of Duty Wiki

A Type 97 Kiska grenade
The standard issue grenade used by Japanese forces. Like the Vietcong of the Vietnam War, the Japanese would arm a Kiska in a trap, such as a mine or trip-wire bomb, and would also use them for many unorthodox, yet effective, purposes. They are known to be hard to "cook", (Hold in the hand a few extra seconds, so they explode sooner) and are dangerous, considering its fuse often varied, and their explosive power. The grenade has no safety handle, or "spoon," like its American counterpart. Instead, the soldier would activate the grenade by pulling the pin and giving it a sharp hit against a hard surface such as a rock or a helmet. This would overcome a creep spring and crush a thin brass cap, allowing the pin to hit the primer and initiate the delay sequence before throwing at the target. This was very dangerous, for if there was a malfunction in the grenade it was possible that the Kiska would explode as soon as the soldier struck it on a hard surface.

[edit] History

The Kiska was later made after the Type 91. which could also be used as a fragmentation hand grenade, but was used as ammo for the Type 10 and Type 89 grenade launchers. For this reason, it had less explosive damage and a longer delay time than a hand grenade. To fix these issues, the Army Technical Bureau developed a new design in 1937.

[edit] Call of Duty: World at War

In single-player campaign mode, you can pick these up from dead Japanese soldiers in the Marine Raiders campaign. These grenades are not available in Multiplayer Split-screen nor Online matchmaking but they can be used in online custom matches if you are the Japanese since online custom matches only allow you to use weapons by country.

[edit] Trivia

  • The player model in the game does not hit the grenade before throwing it. This would make it impossible to cook prior to throwing, and would only activate as the grenade hits the ground.
  • In the Wii version there are only kiskas and stick grenades.
  • Kiskas can be used in online custom matches.
