The M60E4 is a light machine gun featured in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. It can also be obtained in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 via console commands.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare & Modern Warfare Remastered[]

"Fully automatic with high power. Effective at medium to long range."
— Weapon description

Campaign[]

The M60E4 is available briefly in the campaign, appearing only at the end of the level "Game Over". The enemy carrying it jumps out of the passenger's side of the first truck that is transporting troops to the battle (this truck will hit the brakes, ram a car, then reverse). This soldier will end up running to a destroyed green car at the far left hand side of the bridge. It is hard to obtain the M60E4 as it will be dropped near the BMP, and if the player tries to obtain it, the BMP is likely to kill them before they can retrieve it. This version of the M60E4 fires noticeably faster than in Multiplayer, with lower recoil. Also, one of Zakhaev's bodyguards is armed with one and he uses it to kill a SAS operative and to fire at the loyalist helicopter, but it is unobtainable.

For the brief time it is available in the campaign, the M60E4 is extremely powerful, killing in one shot, anywhere to the body, at any range.

Multiplayer[]

In multiplayer, the M60E4 is unlocked at level 19. It can be equipped with a Red Dot Sight, a Grip or an ACOG Scope. It is also one of the few weapons with the option for Gold Camouflage, however this exclusivity is nullified in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, as all weapons can accept Gold Camouflage. The M60E4 is the most powerful machine gun in multiplayer in terms of per-bullet damage, with one of the highest damage outputs per shot in the game, but has high recoil and a low rate of fire compared to the M249 SAW or RPD.

An unusual property of the M60E4 is that it suffers damage drop-off at range. Neither the M249 SAW nor the RPD suffer this, although it is likely for balance due to the M60E4's potential for a two-shot kill. The M60E4 is unique in suffering damage drop-off in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare; in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered it is joined in suffering damage drop-off with the Bered MK8 and the PKM.

The M60E4 is often used with the Double Tap or Stopping Power perks, with Stopping Power being more effective at long range and Double Tap being more effective at medium and close range. Stopping Power allows the M60E4 to kill with two shots at any distance, but does not reduce time to kill at short range; Double Tap, on the other hand, has superior killing speed over stopping power for the M60E4 at close range, but increases recoil. In practice, the RPD is superior to the M60E4 at long range, with or without Stopping Power, due to its slightly faster default firing rate and its lower recoil. However the M60E4 is superior at close range with Double Tap as Double Tap increases its rate of fire past that of the RPD's while retaining a two hit kill.

Like most light machine guns in the game, the M60E4 has a large belt capacity of 100 rounds but also suffers from a slow reload time of nearly 10 seconds and slow speed when switching to it. Thanks to its high damage per shot, some players use Sleight of Hand rather than Stopping Power in order to cut down on reload time. The M60E4 with the grip attachment is less popular because of the large, obstructive iron sights; however, it significantly reduces the high recoil of the gun. To compound the weakness of the iron sights, the M60E4 has extremely obstructive muzzle flash, making tracking targets at range near impossible.

In Hardcore, the M60E4 always kills in one shot at any range regardless of any factors such as Juggernaut or light cover. However, the low rate of fire causes it to suffer in this regard, as faster-firing weapons are more likely to land successful shot first.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare[]

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered[]

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2[]

The M60E4 appears in Modern Warfare 2, through the use of the console command "give m60e4". They can be obtained in campaign levels such as Team Player and The Only Easy Day... Was Yesterday, as well as Special Ops missions Wet Work and Armor Piercing. It reuses the same model and sounds from the previous game, with the exception of firing sound taken from MG4.

Call of Duty: Black Ops[]

The M60E4 appears in Black Ops as a mount weapon in the boat from the mission Crash Site. It used the same model as the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare model.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3[]

The M60E4 was first seen in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Special Ops Survival Mode trailer, as a purchasable weapon. It is also seen on the second Multiplayer Trailer.

Campaign[]

The M60E4 can be found within an elevated shack in "Back on the Grid" and in one of the houses near the church. It can also be dropped by Africa Militia men.

Multiplayer[]

The M60E4 is unlocked at level 72 in as the last light machine gun to be unlocked.

The M60E4 is a high damage LMG. At any range short of 17.5 meters, the M60E4 will deal fifty damage per bullet, needing two shots to kill. At any range beyond 17.5 meters, the M60E4 will deal less than fifty damage but no less than 35 damage, meaning the M60E4 needs three shots to kill at all other ranges. The M60E4, like other LMGs, is a one shot kill at all ranges in Hardcore game types. The M60E4 is the only fully automatic weapon that isn't a shotgun to be able to net a two shot kill at any range. Such power in a fully automatic weapon is very uncommon, and the M60E4 wields it. At ranges where the two shot kill can be achieved, the M60E4 is a scary weapon to go up against. The M60E4 confers a 40% damage bonus on headshots, but this rarely makes a difference in terms of shots to kill, only shaving off a shot to kill at ranges between 17.5 meters and 37.5 meters. Headshots are of no consequence before 17.5 meters and after 37.5 meters. The M60E4 also has high penetration power, allowing it to retain most of its damage when shooting through surfaces.

The M60E4 is held back by its rate of fire. Its rate of fire is one of the slowest of all fully automatic weapons, firing at a lethargic 600 RPM. This rate of fire is so slow that certiain semi-automatic weapons can be fired faster with a proficient trigger finger. This rate of fire means that the M60E4 will kill slower than all other LMGs at ranges where the M60E4 is getting a three shot kill, which is to say, any range beyond 17.5 meters.

The M60E4's accuracy is poor overall. The M60E4's iron sights are wildly unpopular due to the back sight obstructing most of the user's peripheral vision around the front post. The M60E4's recoil values are very large, with recoil values of 80 to the left and 80 to the right. The M60E4 has no downwards recoil value, instead having two upwards recoil values. THe M60E4 will kick upwards with a value of either 10 or 60. Due to the lack of a downwards recoil value, the M60E4 will always kick upwards, meaning that users will have to deal with a constant upwards drift. The M60E4 also has enormous horizontal recoil that will make the weapon lurch heavily from side to side. To make matters worse, the M60E4's centerspeed is the worst in the LMG class, sitting at 1500, tied with the MG36 for the lowest in-class centerspeed. The M60E4 has the ugly combination of a huge recoil profile and a pedestrian centerspeed. Thankfully, the M60E4 has some of the lowest gunkick in the LMG class, so users can at least track their shots adequately enough.

Like other LMGs, the M60E4 has terrible overall handling. Users are restricted to moving at 80% of the base movement speed, strafe speed is a horrible 32%, aiming down the sight takes 400 milliseconds, and the M60E4 has large hip-fire crosshairs. The M60E4's reload speed is terrible, and is actually the slowest consolidated reload speed in the entire game. The M60E4's reload animation is 9.3 seconds long. The user can Reload Cancel after 6.8 seconds. The M60E4 has the slowest reload speed of all weapons that don't reload shell-by-shell, and it will force users to be very careful choosing when to reload the M60E4. It is not a weapon for those that like to reload often and stay topped up as much as possible.

The M60E4, like all other LMGs, has an enormous 100 round belt capacity, tied for the largest among all primary and secondary weapons. The M60E4 also allows users to spawn in with 200 rounds total.

A couple of weapon proficiencies can be beneficial to the M60E4. Impact allows the M60E4 to penetrate through walls even more easily, allowing the M60E4 to retain even more of its damage when shooting through walls and small obstructions. Attachments is the most popular choice, as it is on all other LMGs, as the LMGs have access to a plethora of beneficial attachments that can make the M60E4 even more effective. Focus allows the user to not flinch as much when taking incoming damage, allowing the user to be more accurate when fighting at medium to long range. Finally, Speed is a very helpful choice, increasing the user's movement speed to 88%. Speed can be very helpful for a user that wants to use the M60E4 in a more aggressive manner.

The M60E4 has a smaller than normal attachment selection for an LMG, as the leftward protruding ammo box prevents the use of a Heartbeat Sensor.

The optical attachments are all available on the M60E4, and they are extremely popular choices, as the M60E4's iron sights are commonly regarded as among the worst in the game.

The M60E4 is the worst LMG by a wide margin to use a Silencer on. The only reason to use the M60E4 over other LMGs is the M60E4's two shot kill potential, and the Silencer makes the two shot kill range worse, which goes against the entire point of using the M60E4. Any other LMG would be a far better fit for a Silencer.

The Grip is another popular option. It reduces the M60E4's recoil per shot in all directions by ten percent, and the M60E4's centerspeed is increased to 1875. These two effects combine to make the M60E4 much more accurate and more effective at medium to long ranges.

Rapid Fire increases the M60E4's rate of fire to 750 RPM. This attachment is quite a helpful addition, as the M60E4's rate of fire is one of its core weaknesses compared to other LMGs, and Rapid Fire directly fixes this problem. Using Rapid Fire will make the M60E4 much less accurate, as the slow rate of fire helped offset the M60E4's large recoil profile by allowing for ample time for the weapon to recover from recoil. This attachment is useful for those who want to maximize the M60E4's close quarters effectiveness, which is the M60E4's lone advantage over other LMGs.

Extended Mags increases the M60E4's belt capacity to 150 rounds, and increases the starting ammo loadout to 300 rounds. This gives the M60E4 a ton of ammo on tap, and further increases the M60E4's sustained fire capability. Extended Mags never makes a weapon worse, although on an LMG, it's not the most sensible choice, as the LMGs already have enormous belt capacity and starting ammo loadouts, so some may see Extended Mags as a redundant luxury good.

As with the rest of the LMGs, the M60E4 has a slight increase to its minimum damage in a Title Update, making it require only three shots at most to kill an enemy (where as before was four).

Special Ops[]

The M60E4 is available for both Survival and Mission modes.

Mission Mode[]

The M60E4 is found in the Mission Mode challenges Hit and Run and Fatal Extraction.

Survival Mode[]

The M60E4 is available in Survival Mode at level 12 and costs $7000. The early unlock and high damage makes it useful against Juggernauts and heavy commando troops, along with helicopters, but Sleight of Hand is recommended, as the slow reload becomes a problem.
