The MG4 is a light machine gun featured in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Mobilized, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: Defiance, and Call of Duty Online.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2[]

Campaign[]

The MG4 is a rare weapon that only appears in the Task Force 141 campaign. It is seen being used by Shadow Company in "Just Like Old Times", and can be found and used in "The Only Easy Day... Was Yesterday", "The Gulag" and "Contingency". It has a lower rate of fire than its multiplayer counterpart and can only hold a maximum of 200 rounds spare. For these reasons, other weapons are usually better alternatives. It never appears with any attachments.

Multiplayer[]

The MG4 is unlocked at level 16, making it the third LMG available.

The MG4's damage is poor. The MG4 does thirty damage at all ranges, needing four shots to kill. Getting a Headshot or using Stopping Power increases the damage to 42 damage per bullet, allowing for a three shot kill. If a headshot is attained while using Stopping Power, the MG4 deals 58 damage, guaranteeing a two shot kill. If using a Silencer, the MG4's damage reduces to twenty damage per bullet, needing five shots to kill. A headshot or standard Stopping Power shot when using the Silencer deals 28 damage, returning the MG4 to a four shot kill, but not a one shot kill in Hardcore. When using a Silencer, if using Stopping Power and a headshot is obtained, the bullet does 39 damage, guaranteeing a one shot kill in Hardcore, but two headshots are needed to guarantee a three shot kill. The MG4's damage per bullet is its most significant weakness as an LMG, as it causes the weapon to kill slowly in all situations. The MG4 has high penetration power, although the lesser damage dampens the MG4's performance when shooting through walls.

The MG4's rate of fire is good for an LMG. It has the second highest fire rate of any LMG, firing at 857 RPM. This rate of fire is good, but it won't fully make up for the lacking damage. This also gives the MG4 the worst blend of damage and fire rate among all the LMGs.

The MG4 has the best accuracy of any LMG. Sadly, the iron sights are misaligned, as the true point of aim is further down on the front post than indicated. It is possible to get used to the misalignment, but the mere existence of misalignment deters many users from using the MG4's iron sights. The MG4's recoil per shot is the softest of all LMGs, as it has recoil values of 60 to the left, 60 to the right, 50 upwards, and 30 downwards. The MG4 does not have much vertical recoil, and the horizontal recoil, while notable, is not too bad. The MG4's centerspeed is great, at 1700. The MG4 is one of the more accurate fully automatic weapons in Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer. It may have larger recoil per shot, but the centerspeed advantage greatly aids the MG4 in the accuracy stakes. An odd accuracy quirk is that the MG4 has slightly more idle sway than the other LMGs, and it is actually the fastest idle sway speed in the game, swaying 60% faster than the sniper rifles. Because the idle sway amount is not that large, this odd weakness will not be very notable. Despite some of the MG4's odd accuracy quirks, it has the best recoil profile of any LMG with a 1700 centerspeed. The AUG HBAR has a slightly smaller recoil profile, but it has 200 less centerspeed than the MG4.

The MG4's handling is overall poor, as one comes to expect with an LMG. The MG4 restricts users to 87.5% of the base movement speed, and a strafe speed of just 35%. The MG4 has a lethargic aim down sight time of 350 milliseconds, and the MG4's hip-fire accuracy is bad. The MG4's reload speeds are also among the worst in the LMG category, The MG4's reload animation is a staggering 9.7 seconds long, although a proper Reload Cancel can make it just 7.13 seconds long. Regardless of whether or not the user reload cancels, the MG4 is tied with the RPD for the worst reload speed not just among LMGs, but the worst reload speed for a single belt/magazine in the entire game, exempting the per-shell reloads of shotguns. The MG4's reloads are unbearably slow and will force users to be extremely careful when reloading.

The MG4's belt capacity is excellent, at 100 rounds. With two belts and a 200 round starting ammo loadout, the MG4 provides plenty of ammo. However, the lesser damage and higher fire rate makes the MG4 much less efficient with said ammo.

The MG4 has the standard assortment of LMG attachments on offer. The Grip increases the MG4's centerspeed to 2100, further bolstering the MG4's accuracy advantage. There's no disadvantage to using the Grip, and an extra 400 centerspeed is a substantial upgrade. It is among the most valuable attachments on offer.

The Red Dot Sight and Holographic Sight are both extremely valued on the MG4, as both of them are properly aligned, whereas the iron sights of the MG4 are not aligned properly. Some may even consider it more valuable than the Grip considering that the MG4 is already very accurate. Combining one of these attachments with the Grip will allow the user to take the utmost advantage of the MG4's accuracy, bolstering it even further while providing a clear and accurate sight picture.

The Silencer reduces muzzle flash and makes the MG4 quieter when firing. Unfortunately, the MG4's Silencer will not keep the user off of radar when firing the MG4, essentially ruining the point of the attachment since it provides a severe damage penalty. Do not use the attachment under any serious circumstances, as it provides very little in the way of relevant benefit, and the downside is extreme.

The ACOG Scope provides a high-magnification optic, but it slows down the aim down sight time to 400 milliseconds, and more significantly, reduces the centerspeed to 1300. The MG4 is significantly less accurate as a result, since it is particularly reliant on its centerspeed to maintain its accuracy. Using it in tandem with the Grip returns the centerspeed back to 1700, which can provide an accurate weapon for long range should the user want that. The Thermal Scope provides a long range scope with a thermal overlay of the battlefield that illuminates enemies white hot. Although it can help greatly in target acquisition, it is not a good attachment, as it severely inflates idle sway to a degree similar to sniper rifles, making the MG4 painfully imprecise.

FMJ is called Explosive Rounds when used on the MG4, but its function remains the same. It increases penetration power. It's a fine attachment for those who like to shoot through walls with LMGs, and it doesn't harm performance. For those that don't like shooting through walls, the attachment can be safely ignored.

The Heartbeat Sensor provides portable radar on the side of the weapon. It doesn't hurt to use the attachment, although its benefit isn't that significant for more experienced players.

Extended Mags increases the MG4's magazine capacity to 200 rounds, putting the entire starting ammo loadout in one belt. Under normal circumstances, the user will never need to reload the MG4. The only way the user can reload an MG4 with Extended Mags is if additional ammo is acquired through Scavenger or by picking up ammo off of the ground. The attachment essentially allows the user to never have to worry about performing the MG4's terrible reload. However, although it does provide a relevant benefit, the reloads, as bad as they are, are infrequent enough that many users will find Extended Mags to be unnecessary or overkill. It never hurts to use, but some have little use for it.

Overall, the MG4 is a very niche weapon that struggles to pique the interest of many users. The MG4's damage really holds it back, as it cannot kill enemies quickly. It specializes in longer-ranged combat, as its consistent damage and great accuracy give the MG4 a notable advantage, allowing users to fire fully automatically with ease out to longer ranges than other LMGs. Unfortunately, the MG4's accuracy advantage isn't significant enough to make it stand out over other LMG options. The misaligned iron sights is also a huge burden on the user. Unless the user is used to the misaligned iron sights, the poor iron sights end up forcing a lot of users to either forego the Grip in favor of a sight attachment, or foregoing their 1st perk to gain the benefit of both the Grip and a sight attachment. The Grip in general is also a major problem for the MG4's value, as the Grip significantly improves the accuracy of any LMG, further reducing the point of using the MG4 when most LMGs that have a significant damage advantage over the MG4 can be made similarly accurate just by using the Grip. As a result, the MG4 is not a very popular primary weapon choice in multiplayer.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Mobilized[]

The MG4 appears in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Mobilized as one of the two LMGs in-game. The MG4 shares the same basic appearance as its Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 counterpart, but the ammunition is stored in a box as opposed to a cloth bag. The MG4 has a higher rate of fire, as well as a higher damage per bullet. The MG4 is only used by the Insurgency in the levels "Interception", "Needle in a Haystack", "To the Rig", "Winter Assault", and "Last Chance".

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: Defiance[]

The MG4 returns in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: Defiance. It has the same model and stats (except it now has recoil) of Mobilized, but when aiming down sights all the weapon turns into an M249 SAW strangely. In Gun Game, the MG4 is the eighteenth weapon tier.

Call of Duty Online[]

The MG4 returns in Call of Duty Online as the MAG43.
