It is similar to the EM1, being a Directed Energy Weapon with its ammo gauged by percentage. Zombies hit by the Magnetron will explode shortly afterwards, similarly to the Wave Gun from Treyarch's Zombies.
The Magnetron is comparable to the EM1; it fires a continuous beam of directed energy that will cause zombies to explode when killed. Differences are that the Magnetron, unlike the EM1 in Exo Zombies, can overheat: when the weapon is close to overheat, sounds will be heard (and the overheat gauge located below the percentage count will fill), and the player will have to cool the battery down. The Magnetron will slow all affected zombies in front of the user (similar to Nano Swarm), allowing for easier kills. Kills with the Magnetron grant 100 points each, making it the most lucrative weapon available. The wide field of fire makes the Magnetron an excellent companion to Hyper-Damage power-ups.
Upgrading it is a good thing to make it more durable, although the weapon is still hard to use against the powerful zombies that appear in higher rounds. Specifically, it is nearly useless against the Goliath Exo Zombie.
This gun is needed in order to complete the MEAT IS MURDER Easter Egg in Infection.
- In trailers, it was known in the HUD as MWG, which stands for Magnetron Wave Gun.
