"Kaboom."
— The Demonic Announcer upon getting a nuke.

The Nuke, also known as Atomical Bomb in Call of Duty: Zombies, DNA Bomb in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Vernichten in Call of Duty: WWII, is a power-up found in every Treyarch, Exo Zombies, Infinite Warfare and WWII Zombies map, as well as in the multiplayer Hordepoint variations in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. Its purpose is to kill every zombie currently spawned when obtained.

Ability[]

When a Nuke is picked up, all zombies spawned on the map are killed. In Call of Duty: Black Ops (DS), the Nuke will also end the round. Additionally, all players currently alive (or on the obtainer's team in Grief) are awarded 400 points, cash or Jolts after all zombies are dead, except in the Call of Duty: World at War version of Nacht der Untoten. In Call of Duty: Zombies, only the player who picked up the Nuke will get 400 points, and only if 6 or more zombies are killed by it. Since Call of Duty: Black Ops, this point value is affected by Double Points and its variants, awarding 800 points when both are active. When picked up, the screen will flash white and blind the player for about one second in Treyarch maps, or radiate a shockwave in non-Treyarch maps. Zombies are killed by the Nuke affected by the distance to the location of the nuke, and zombies being killed by the Nuke cannot harm the player. In every map except the World at War version of Nacht der Untoten and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, the Demonic Announcer will say "Kaboom" after a Nuke is grabbed; Infinite Warfare instead has various quotes for each announcer when a Nuke is used. Zombies do not start spawning again until after all zombies have been killed by the Nuke. In Call of Duty: Black Ops, the player will not get any points for shooting or killing a zombie affected by the Nuke. Prior to Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, the Nuke had no effect on major enemies and bosses, and Nukes will either damage or stagger, or do both, on heavy and special enemies but won't kill them if their health isn't low enough. In Call of Duty: Vanguard, special enemies are also killed by the Nuke. Zombies can still drop power-ups if they die from a Nuke, including more Nukes.

The Nuke and its variants can be spawned forcefully by using various consumables found in the games. Nukes can be forcefully spawned using the Dead of Nuclear Winter twice, as part of the nine power-ups with Reign Drops or randomly from the I'm Feeling Lucky Gobblegums in Call of Duty: Black Ops III, or from the Dead of Nuclear Winter or Reign Drops Elixirs from Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Nukes can also be spawned forcefully from the Kaboooom! Fortune card. Vernichten can be forcefully spawned from the Vernichten (Nuke) Consumable.

In Dead Ops Arcade, Dead Ops Arcade II: Cyber's Avengening and Dead Ops Arcade 3: Rise of the Mamaback, Nukes can be picked up and stored in the player's inventory to be used whenever necessary. When triggered, a Nuke falls from the sky and kills every zombie currently on the map, and the player who uses it gets three seconds of invincibility similar to the Lightning Bolt. On Turned mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, the Nuke can be picked up by either the humans or the zombies; when used by either side, the opposing team will freeze in place before dying. In Outbreak, the Nuke only kills all Zombies and damages other enemies within a certain radius of its place of activation.

Trivia[]

  • George A. Romero will laugh when a Nuke is activated.
  • In Call of Duty: Black Ops, zombies will still break down and pass through barriers when a Nuke is going off; attacking through barriers is the only way regular zombies can harm or down a player during this time, as they usually will not harm the player(s) until the Nuke is done killing zombies.
  • The power-up icon for the Treyarch games, Infinite Warfare and WWII resembles the Fat Man nuclear bomb.
  • Even if Insta-Kill is active, it will take the normal amount of bullets or melee hits to kill a zombie in the process of being affected by a Nuke.
