Randomly generated soldiers are soldiers that appear in the game randomly. They have no definite name or rank. Their looks are drawn from a limited amount of models, and their weapons come from a small pool that is dictated by the faction the character is being generated for.

Unless a fixed name is given beforehand, the names and ranks of friendly soldiers will be chosen from a pool of random names in the same manner as their appearance; these names can be seen by the player by aiming a weapon at a friendly soldier and, from Call of Duty 2 onwards,[1] can be heard in battlechatter (e.g. "Smith, contact at your 9 o'clock"). In the case of games set during World War II, this will also reveal the class of weapon they are using; in Call of Duty 2's British Army for example, a soldier with a Lee-Enfield will be described as a rifleman, a soldier with a Thompson submachine gun or Sten gun will be described as a submachine gunner, and a soldier with a Bren gun will be described as a support gunner. Enemy soldiers will also have randomly generated names and ranks for the purposes of battlechatter, though these are not visible to the player by default.

If a friendly randomly generated soldier dies, they will usually be replaced with another solider (Exceptions include the missions "Alps Chateau" and "Dulag IIIA" from the original Call of Duty). Enemy soldiers are usually limited to a set number of pre-determined soldiers per mission and spawn triggers and will not be replaced upon death.

Randomly generated names (Call of Duty)[]

In Call of Duty, there are 150 random American names, 141 random British names, and 139 random Russian names. In the American case, if the random character has a Thompson submachine gun, they are automatically a Lieutenant. Otherwise, the random American has a 60% chance to be a Private, 20% chance to be a Corporal, and 20% chance to be a sergeant. In the Russian and British cases, all randomly generated soldiers have their rank attached to their name string. Each name has an "ID number" attached to it that the game fetches when it associates it with a person.

Randomly generated names (Call of Duty 2)[]

In Call of Duty 2, the naming system has been slimmed down and revamped from the first game. There are 60 American names, 60 British names, 51 German names, 27 Russian male first names, 138 Russian male last names, 23 Russian female first names, and 31 Russian female last names. A different rank system is in action for each faction as well.

American names[]

The rank of randomized American soldiers is based on the character models a soldier has been assigned, the numbers of which are fixed in the American campaign. If they have the model of an American corporal, their rank will be Corporal. If they have Sgt. Randall's model, they will be a Sergeant. If they have Lt. Coffey's model, they will be a Lieutenant. Otherwise, they will be a Private.

British names[]

If a soldier's character model has been fixed to a Private's model, they will be a private. If their model is fixed to a Corporal's, they will be a Corporal. Otherwise, a randomly generated soldier has a 50% to be a Private, a 30% chance to be a Corporal, and a 20% chance to be a Sergeant.

German names[]

Main article: German Military/Names#Call of Duty 2

The introduction of unscripted battlechatter in Call of Duty 2 meant that German soldiers could now be given a rank and name combination in the same manner as Allied soldiers were in preceding titles. German soldiers have a 60% chance to be a Private, 20% chance to be a Corporal, and a 20% chance to be a Sergeant.

Russian names[]

Main article: Soviet Armed Forces/Names#Call of Duty 2

If a Soviet soldier is wearing a "trench hat," they will be a Corporal. Otherwise, a Soviet soldier has a 50% chance to be a Private, a 30% chance to be a Corporal, and a 20% chance to be a sergeant. Uniquely, Soviet soldiers are given a composite name consisting of a first name and last name. A small number of female soldiers are present; while they follow the same ranking system as male soldiers, they have a different pool of first names and use a modified pool of last names due to the Russian custom of adding an "-a" to the end of female names.

Randomly generated names (Call of Duty 2: Big Red One)[]

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One has 140 American names. If a random character has a Thompson submachine gun, they are automatically a Lieutenant. Otherwise, they with either be a Private, Corporal or Sergeant.

Polish soldiers appear in only one mission, "The Mace". Oddly, the Polish names are a composite of a first name and last name but with no rank like the French, while the player encounters soldiers with fixed names and ranks in the same manner as other campaigns like Pte. Olszewski or Pte. Nowak

Task Force 141 names (Modern Warfare 2)[]

Main article: Task Force 141/Members#Other Members (Modern Warfare 2)

All randomly generated Task Force 141 members will have a random callsign in place of an actual name.

U.S. Navy SEALs appearing in "The Only Easy Day... Was Yesterday" and "The Gulag" use the Task Force 141 name pool, while those appearing in "Of Their Own Accord" use the U.S. Army Rangers name pool. Curiously enough, the _names.gsc file indexes the Task Force 141 name pool under the SEAL heading.

Shadow Company names[]

These would appear to be unused since they are not mentioned in battlechatter while scripted dialogue in "Just Like Old Times" uses completely different callsigns.

Russian names[]

Main article: Soviet Armed Forces/Names#Call of Duty: Black Ops

These names are only visible in "Project Nova", but are presumably used for Soviet soldiers in other missions. If so, not only would this be one of the few name pools to be used by a friendly faction and a hostile faction in the same game, it would also be a name pool used by a faction that is variously friendly or hostile depending on the mission.

Randomly generated names (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3)[]

It should be noted that in many cases Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 uses slightly modified versions of the randomly generated soldier name pools from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Delta Force and U.S. Navy SEAL names[]

Main article: Delta Force#Generated Names

Delta Force operators and the Navy SEAL Team that assists the player in "Hunter Killer" use a list of callsigns based on the Task Force 141 name pool from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 .

U.S. Army Ranger names[]

Main article: U.S. Army Rangers/Members#Randomly Generated Members 2

The U.S. Army Rangers seen in "Black Tuesday", "Goalpost", and "Scorched Earth" mostly use the same names as in Modern Warfare 2, though some new names are present.

Russian names[]

The Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare name pool is reused. Both the Ultranationalists (including the Inner Circle) and the Federal Protective Service of Russia use this pool, making it one of the few name pools to be used by a friendly faction and a hostile faction in the same game.

Panamanian Defense Force names[]

These names are also used for American soldiers during "Suffer With Me", making this one of the few name pools to be used by a friendly faction and a hostile faction in the same game. Since the Panamanian Defense Forces are friendly when playing as Alex Mason in "Time and Fate" but hostile when playing as Raul Menendez in that mission and when playing "Suffer With Me", it would also be a name pool used by a faction that is variously friendly or hostile depending on the mission.

Randomly generated names (Call of Duty: Ghosts)[]

Call of Duty: Ghosts has one of the smallest pool of names for randomly generated soldiers. The only ranks available for them are Pvt. (Private), Cpl. (Corporal) and Sgt. (Sergeant), without counting the few soldiers with fixed rank and name, like SSGT. Suarez in "Homecoming"; in "Brave New World", though, at the end of the mission the player find two soldiers with fixed names, "DeFields" and "Sago", but with random ranks, who can spawn as Lieutenants (Lt.).

Trivia[]

  • In all games, several randomly generated soldiers are named after developers who have worked on the particular game those soldiers appear in. Examples would be 'Blundell' in Call of Duty 3, standing for Jason Blundell, 'Bowling' and 'Pelayo' in the original Modern Warfare trilogy, standing for Robert Bowling and Velinda Reyes (née Pelayo) respectively, and 'Livingstone' from several titles, standing for Peter Livingstone.
