The Ranger is a sawed-off double-barreled shotgun. While use of the double-barrel has fallen in modern times, they are often sawn off and used as concealed weapons. Some are light enough to be fired one-handed.

[edit] In Game

While all shotguns in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 are available as sidearms, the Ranger (as well as the Model 1887) is unique in that it can be used similarly to Akimbo pistols. Each barrel is fired with different keys: the left and right triggers/shoulder buttons/mouse buttons. It is unlocked at Level 42 in Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer mode. Akimbo is one of the more preferable attachments as it gives you four shots without reloading, as opposed to only two. Akimbo is also quite effective not only for having more ammo before reloading, and you cannot use the iron sights on the Ranger anyway, even without Akimbo. Along with the aforementioned advantages of Akimbo, the attachment also allows the shotgun to fire four shells quickly, this helps at medium range when the target is too far away to be killed in one or two shots. It is also fairly accurate, despite what the Create-A-Class stats and common sense would say. Reload Canceling also works very well with the Ranger.

[edit] Trivia

  • It uses the same model as the Double-barreled shotgun sawn-off w/grip from Call of Duty: World at War, except for a few coloring alterations.
  • In real life firing two sawn off shotguns at once makes controlling the weapons much harder, because of the high recoil due to the barrels being sawed off since the weight of a full barrel brings down the muzzle climb.
  • Using the Ranger with Akimbo and the FMJ attachment  will make them even more powerful and combined with 2 more shells than normal.
  • When using Akimbo, even without the FMJ attachment, 4 shots will destroy a car (Not just ignite it) at full health at point-blank range.
  • The challenge that requires you to kill a player by firing both barrels of the shotgun at the same time can also be accomplished by killing 2 players without reloading and without using Akimbo.
