Russia, in the era of the Cold War, was one of the republics of the Soviet Union. Member of the Allies during World War II. Although it had signed a non-aggression pact with Germany, Soviet Union joined the Allies after Hitler began his attempts to invade. The battles on the Russian front had the largest cost in human lives. The Battle of Stalingrad in particular is to this day the most costly battle ever fought in terms of human lives. Ultimately, the Soviet Union's great push westward into Berlin had the greatest impact on the Allied victory in terms of German casualties. During the Second World War, country was lead by Joseph Stalin. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, it was replaced with the Commonwealth of Independent States, where the leading role is played by Russian Federation.

The Russians were a playable campaign seen in all of the Call of Duty games except in Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, Call of Duty 3, Call of Duty: Roads to Victory and Call of Duty 4. The Russians campaign in Call of Duty 3 was replaced by the Canadian and Polish campaigns. During Call of Duty 4, Russia is in the midst of a Civil war between forces loyal to the Russian Federation and Ultra-Nationalists who wish to see the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact re-established.
