The Sentry Gun is a killstreak reward available in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified, Call of Duty Online and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, an Assault pointstreak in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty: Ghosts, a scorestreak in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Call of Duty: Mobile and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and a Killstreak and Scorestreak in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III.

It is a usable piece of equipment on most maps of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Zombies, and can be placed in the grenade slot in the Zombies mode of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. It is also a unit type in Call of Duty: Heroes and Call of Duty: Siege.

Overview[]

The Sentry Gun is an unmanned weapon capable of autonomously acquiring and firing upon enemy targets through thermal detection. It, as well as the UAV and Predator, is indicative of the increasing role of unmanned technology on the battlefield. The Sentry Gun cannot lock on to enemy aircrafts or enemy equipment.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2[]

Campaign[]

M5 Sentry Guns are seen in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's campaign various times. They first appear in the level "Wolverines!". The Sentry in this level is positioned on top of Nate's Restaurant, where it provides autonomous cover for Sergeant Foley and his team during the recovery of codename "Raptor". The player can reposition the sentry gun, which can be quite useful. An enemy sentry gun appears in "Exodus"; this one can be moved by the player, although it only fires at US forces instead of the Spetsnaz. Parts of a sentry gun can be found throughout Makarov's safe house in the "Loose Ends" mission. Sentry guns can also be found during the level "Endgame" on one of the banks during the boat chase before the player goes through the cave.

Special Ops[]

Sentry guns are only available for use in the levels Homeland Security, Wardriving, and Wreckage. They are used in Homeland Security to defend from inside of the gas station and adjacent building. They are used in Wardriving to guard the locations of the computers as the files are downloaded. They are used in Wreckage to kill enemies and destroy the vehicles.

Multiplayer[]

The Sentry Gun is a multiplayer killstreak reward in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. After achieving a killstreak of 5 (or 4 with the Hardline perk), a player may call in an MH-6 Little Bird that will airdrop a package (similar to the Care Package killstreak) containing the Sentry Gun. After acquiring the package, the player can place the gun in the location of their choice. It can detect enemies at a moderate distance, with its cone of fire centered on where the user positions it. The turret can be picked up and moved; the turret is disabled while held, and the player is unable to use weapons or other equipment. It must be placed before anything else is done. Also, if the player is killed while holding it, it is dropped wherever the player was killed. However, if the sentry gun was being held in an illegal location (indicated by the outline of the sentry gun turning red), and the player is killed, the player loses the sentry gun. If not destroyed, the turret will stop functioning after 90 seconds, appearing to spontaneously short-circuit.

Any players with the Cold-Blooded perk will not be targeted by the turret (though they are still vulnerable to shots fired at other targets). The sentry gun can be disabled with a single melee hit or by gunfire. A Flashbang or Stun Grenade will disable the Sentry Gun for a few seconds, leaving it vulnerable to be knifed. It can also be avoided by moving around its flank, outside of its firing arc. A riot shield user can approach the sentry gun and knock it down with the shield bump, or let the gun destroy itself with ricochet hits. A certain number of destroyed sentry guns will remain on the map and will only vanish when more sentry guns are placed. These destroyed guns form a visual distraction, both because players will approach them cautiously as it's hard to tell if a gun is active or disabled and because they are so bulky, allowing players to hide behind them. They can, however, be fired and walked through. The EMP disables the sentry gun permanently.

Sentry Gun Concept Art

Sentry gun concept art.

Sentry guns have 1000 health points and no damage multipliers. Melees destroy them instantly, explosives do 7x their base damage to them. (so if an AT4-HS does 160 base damage, it will do 1120 damage with a direct hit to a sentry gun). Bullet damage is the same as normal.

Multiplayer[]

The Sentry Gun is a killstreak in Call of Duty: Black Ops. It requires 6 Kills, unlike 5 in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Like in Modern Warfare 2, upon earning the Sentry Gun, it must be summoned via static Care Package and acquired. The Sentry Gun crate can no longer be changed using the Hardline Pro ability due to a patch, which also applies to the SAM Turret and Valkyrie Rockets. Enemy players using Hacker Pro can turn the player's Sentry Guns against them if they can get close enough and hack it, although a hacked Sentry Gun cannot be moved by its new user unless the original user uses Hacker Pro to hack the Sentry Gun and revert the previous hack. Players using Ghost Pro will not be targeted by the Sentry Gun, although they are still vulnerable to shots fired at other targets. It also has a new look, sporting a different minigun and ammo box.

Users of this killstreak should be aware of opponents within very close proximity, as the Sentry Gun is vulnerable to 1-hit kill from a knife melee despite their excellent protection against bullets. Concussions and flashbangs will also stun sentry guns for a short period of time, although they will resume firing shortly if not destroyed immediately. These tactical grenades are often used to get up close to the Sentry Gun and strike it down with a melee attack.

The player or friendly players can also choose to throw Willy Pete grenades at their own Sentry Gun to visually obscure it from the enemy, as the Sentry Gun's automatic targeting is not hindered or effected by smoke or Nova Gas.

The Sentry Gun will illuminate on the mini-map when it is firing with a specific icon resembling a top-down view of the Sentry Gun.

The Sentry Gun can be moved to alternative positions if the current position is not desirable. Users should make use of this feature to fool enemies. The Sentry Gun can also be used to discourage movement along certain lines of attack, which can help direct enemies to specific points that the player can take advantage of. Sentry Guns should be guarded if it keeps getting stunned, as a stunned Sentry Gun can indicate an enemy intending to knife the Sentry.

Proper placement is vital to the success of a Sentry Gun. An ideal spot would be one with lots of open space, and few flanking routes to sneak up on the Sentry Gun, such as the Tropas spawn on Firing Range. Sentry Guns on a set timer regardless of what happens to them. As a result, it's best to put the Sentry Gun in hotly contested areas. Placing a Sentry Gun in a more obscure part of the map is a misuse of the Sentry Gun. The Sentry Gun's limited uptime also makes it much less effective in games with slower pace or lower player counts. The inverse is also true in that the Sentry Gun's value increases dramatically in matches that are faster paced and with more players.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3[]

The Sentry's function is identical to its Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 counterpart. However, it is does not have its box magazine in multiplayer, only in Special Ops. The multiplayer variant has a drum mag in its place.

Multiplayer[]

The Sentry Gun is a 5 point Strike Chain reward in the Assault Strike Package in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. It works exactly the same as in Modern Warfare 2, and can be acquired from Care Packages (including those from an Osprey). They have a much faster acquisition rate and range than in Survival Mode. A Sentry Gun will last for 90 seconds before self-destructing. A player using Blind Eye will not be targeted by the turret, although they are still vulnerable to shots fired at other targets. Flashbangs and stun grenades can disable them for a period of time, allowing players to safely bypass the sentry. It can be destroyed with a single knife attack. With Blind Eye Pro, bullets can easily bring down a Sentry Gun.

The Sentry Gun is best suited to protecting objectives such as Domination positions or CTF flags. It can take the place of a stationary protector for objectives while everyone else on the team is playing the game. Placing them in places where enemies cannot approach it without being exposed makes it deadly to medium-to-long ranges.

Special Ops[]

Sentry Guns make an appearance in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Special Ops. They appear in the equipment armory in Survival Mode. They also appear in Mission Mode, in the missions Firewall and Fatal Extraction. The sentry guns in Fatal Extraction reward the player with 100 XP upon destruction. Unlike its multiplayer variant, the Sentry Gun needs time to spin up, and always fires in bursts. They also appear in Special Ops Chaos, obtained from friendly care packages.

Survival Mode[]

In Survival Mode, the Sentry Gun is fairly effective against enemy MH-6 Little Birds due to the velocity of the bullets which can even engage them at long range easily compared to its counterpart. However, it is not recommened to use it against enemy's helicopter or even place it at a open area as enemy helicopters will destroy it within a matter of seconds. It is best suited for medium-to-long ranges. They look identical to its Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 counterpart.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II[]

"Deploy an automated Sentry Gun. Can be remotely controlled."
— In-game description.

Campaign[]

Sentry Guns are present in Campaign missions, used by both allies and enemies. In the Strike Force mission FOB Spectre, two Sentry Guns are given to defend the objectives (a third is given if Objective D is to be protected). These Sentry Guns can be remote controlled just like the multiplayer version. Unlike in multiplayer, the Sentry Guns in the campaign have ability to turn and fire in a full 360 degree circle, rather than the 180 degree arc that Sentry Guns are restricted to in multiplayer, and are only stunned by EMP Grenades. They once again sport a new look, with a three-barred minigun turret and a new targeting system.

Multiplayer[]

The Sentry Gun returns in Call of Duty: Black Ops II's multiplayer and requires a scorestreak of 800. Unlike previous incarnations, the Sentry Gun does not require summoning via Care Package and can be placed down as soon as the player has access to it.

It is possible to control the Sentry Gun by remote control, similar to the Remote Sentry. However, it will also seek and fire upon targets without the player's intervention. The Sentry Gun is much more resilient than in previous games, as it will not be temporarily disabled by concussions or flashbangs, and it cannot be damaged by melee attacks.

An effective tactic with the sentry gun that one can employ is to deploy it on the edges and corners of a map in a wide, open space. From this position, the sentry can usually effectively lock down that area of the map and score many kills. Placed well, it can be difficult to shoot at and all but nearly impossible to be hacked by the Black Hat. From one of these positions, its only real vulnerability will be from EMP Grenades.  There is also no perk that makes a player immune to the Sentry Gun's targeting system, unlike in previous games.

EMP Grenades, as previously mentioned, are a perfect counter to the Sentry Gun, as one will instantly destroy the Sentry. A player's own EMP that happens to hit the Sentry Gun also destroys the Sentry Gun. In Hardcore, friendly EMP Grenades also have this effect. In a match with regular EMP usage, Sentry Guns are thus very easily, quickly, and regularly destroyed.

Zombies[]

Main article: Turret

The Sentry Gun is now known as the Turret, is found as a buildable item in TranZit that fires upon zombies and the Avogadro. The Turret can be built at the Farm workbench with a lawnmower, an unusable RPD, and an ammo box. When built, the Turret can be placed and it will automatically target enemies in its 180 degree arc, however it will not fire. It has to be powered by a nearby Turbine to fire.

The Turret has a high damage output and has unlimited ammunition. It's most effective when placed in wide sightlines which enables it to eliminate medium hordes of zombies. However, the slow targeting system can be ineffective with large groups and the Turret will eventually be destroyed by zombies. Using a Turbine to power the Turret can be detrimental if the player is trying to use it for another purpose, like accessing doors or powering a different buildable.

Call of Duty Online[]

The Sentry Gun returns in Call of Duty Online as a killstreak. It is unlocked at level 10 and can be used after getting five kills without dying.

Call of Duty: Ghosts[]

The Sentry Gun returns in Call of Duty: Ghosts as a Multiplayer Killstreak and Extinction Pointstreak.

Multiplayer[]

The Sentry Gun returns in Ghosts as a slightly less powerful version of the Sentry Gun from Black Ops II. It is very powerful but it can be destroyed relatively easily. It will not take as many shots and it can be destroyed with only three knife hits. It also sports a similar look to the Remote Sentry from Modern Warfare 3.

Extinction[]

"Place an Automated Sentry Gun."
— In-game description

The Sentry Gun appears in Extinction as a strike package unlockable at level 22, that costs $2000.

The Sentry Gun can be a highly useful tool for killing cryptids, as it provides a perfectly accurate ranged attack. This perfectly accurate, ranged attack makes the Sentry Gun very good at fighting Bombers and Gargoyles, as they can prove to be a difficult target for players since they tend to be very far away initially. Sentry Guns are very good at outright killing the fragile Bombers, while they deal solid chip damage to Gargoyles, even potentially forcing the Gargoyle to land, which is very helpful given the combination of health and difficulty of hitting the Gargoyle. The Sentry Gun holds down longer sightlines very well.

Unlike other strike packages, Scouts and Hunters can temporarily incapacitate, and temporarily destroy the sentry gun should one get close enough. The scout or hunter needs a few seconds to bite into it and destroy it. During this process, the sentry gun will not fire at anything. As well, Rhinos and Seekers can target the sentry gun and deal damage to it. As such, the Sentry Gun requires quite a good deal of protection to ensure it does not get wasted, especially against Rhinos, since they tend to target the Sentry Guns commonly and can quickly destroy a Sentry Gun with its attacks. Also unlike other strike packages, the Sentry Gun is capable of overheating. Smoke will emit from the barrel when this happens, and the Sentry Gun will not fire at anything until the barrel stops smoking. Because there are no audible or visual indicators to tell the player that a Sentry Gun has overheated other than looking at the Sentry Gun directly, it can be difficult for players to identify when the Sentry Gun has overheated and needs to be protected. The Sentry Gun's shortcomings are most apparent against hunters, as even with a medium range sight line, the sentry gun might not be able to kill the hunter before it gets attacked.

The sentry gun makes up for its vulnerability and possible overheating by having an extremely long operating time, rewarding players for protecting the sentry gun by having easily the longest operating time of all strike packages. With good protection, one Sentry Gun is capable of lasting up to several minutes, and even capable of being used for multiple hives even with extensive use. Another great advantage of the Sentry Gun is the fact that it can be upgraded to have multiple Sentry Guns placed by one user at once, providing massive amounts of firepower.

Because Cryptids sometimes target Sentry Guns, players can take advantage of the Sentry Gun's ability to distract Cryptids by placing it around or directly in traps. This will allow the trap to kill Cryptids that target the Sentry Gun, facilitating protection of the Sentry Gun(s). Because of this, Engineers can make great use of the Sentry Gun due to their ability to use traps much more effectively. In addition to that, Engineers have larger wallet sizes to more easily accommodate the exoribant cost of two Sentry Guns. Because the Sentry Gun is a natural target, it can even be used to divert attention away from crucial points.

The sentry gun has some of the highest per use cost of all the strike packages at $2000, only slightly less expensive than the Vulture. When factoring in the cost of two sentries at once, the Sentry Gun is easily the most expensive of the Strike Packages. With that said, the ability to have two sentries at once makes the Sentry Gun among the most powerful strike packages on offer. It requires more protection from the user than other strike packages, but the cost is well worth the reward, and two sentry guns can easily make up for a lack of personal prowess, such as if the user is playing with Do Less Damage active.

One of the biggest disadvantages of the Sentry Gun is the fact that it must be manually placed, and the effectiveness of the Sentry Gun varies wildly depending on how it is placed. Sentry Guns that aren't facing key lanes of attack will be much less valuable, and the Sentry Gun will need to be moved from location to location. If the user is looking after two Sentry Guns, the player doesn't have a lot of time to move the Sentries from one locale to another on maps that force Cryptid encounters if the player(s) are taking too long. Players are also highly vulnerable when placing or moving a sentry Gun, since the user cannot defend themselves until the Sentry Gun is placed down.

The Sentry Gun has one armory upgrade: Sentry Armor. This armory upgrade costs five teeth and will allow the sentry gun to sustain more damage before being destroyed. This doesn't increase the operating time of the sentry gun, and it doesn't do much help against hunters and scouts, which can still completely destroy the sentry gun. That being said, it is still an upgrade with no downside that will enable it to take more damage from Rhinos and Seekers.

Like the Vulture, kills from the Sentry Gun count towards turret kill challenges.

Upgrades[]

  • Place an Automated Sentry Gun.
    • +1 (Cost: 1): Upgraded with improved targeting, a wider firing arc, and double the range.
    • +2 (Cost: 1): Dramatically increases the firing rate of the sentry gun.
    • +3 (Cost: 2): Armor piercing ammo is effective against the Rhinos plus 30% more ammo.
    • +4 (Cost: 3): Place two turrets at once with less chance of either of them overheating.

Call of Duty: Heroes[]

The Sentry Gun, internally the Machine Gun Turret, is the first defense the player acquires in Call of Duty: Heroes.

Gallery[]

Call of Duty: Siege[]

The Sentry Gun returns in Call of Duty: Siege and functions similarly as in Heroes. It can be obtained from the store for platinum or from a Supply Drop.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare[]

The Sentry Gun (called Sentry Turret in-game) is usable in Zombies mode on the maps Zombies in Spaceland, Rave in the Redwoods, Shaolin Shuffle, and The Beast From Beyond. When placed, the Sentry Turret can kill any zombies in front of it for the next 60 seconds, after which it breaks. It can be picked up and placed elsewhere as in previous games.

Zombies in Spaceland[]

The Sentry Turret can be obtained from the Souvenir Coin Machine by inserting three blue Souvenir Coins.

Rave in the Redwoods[]

The Sentry Turret can be acquired from a totem pole by inserting three purple Gems.

Shaolin Shuffle[]

The Sentry Turret can be built at the mahjong table across from Blue Bolts by placing three tiles with a turret symbol onto the table. The tiles can spawn:

  • On the sidewalk next to the Inferno Club, right in front of the subway entrance.
  • On the wooden pallets next to the Magic Wheel location in front of the Inferno Club.
  • In the Inferno Club, on the counter of the blue room.
  • In the second floor of the Inferno Club, on a support beam.
  • Up the stairs from Tuff 'Nuff, on a wooden crate next to a possible film reel spawn.
  • On the road next to a white van in front of the Inferno Club.

The Beast From Beyond[]

The Sentry Turret can only be obtained during the boss battle, in which it will be located in a crate and can be used to kill Cryptids.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4[]

The Sentry Gun returns in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 as a Scorestreak under the name Sentry. It's also accessible in Zombies as a piece of selectable equipment.

The Sentry is functionally similar to it's previous iterations, but with a few small changes. Instead of placing down a Sentry Gun, the player will hold a briefcase containing the turret, which will transform upon activation.

In Zombies, the Sentry is a selectable piece of equipment that recharges in the Player's inventory. Only one charge can be stored, and the Sentry itself will disappear after a round is completed.

The Sentry Gun returns in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III as both Killstreak and Scorestreak under the name Remote Turret. Besides to act independently like in previous games, it can now be controlled remotely.

Zombies[]

The Remote Turret is also available in the Zombies mode. It is used similarly to its Multiplayer counterpart. Players can acquire a Remote Turret as a reward for completing contracts, as ground loot, or by purchasing one at the Buy Station for 2,000 Essence.

Remote Turrets are commonly found around warlord fortresses, and will engage players upon sight.

Trivia[]

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2[]

  • Two sentry guns without tripods can be found on the mission "Loose Ends" inside the weapons cache room, although they are unusable. It clips through the ammo box and the shelf partially.
  • A Sentry Gun can acquire and destroy helicopters and Harriers. It can even acquire an AC-130, but cannot destroy it.
  • The Sentry Gun has a Picatinny rail attached to it. However, no upgrades are actually available for the gun.
  • If a player is playing Special Ops and is killed while holding the sentry gun, they will still be carrying it while they are down. Enemies will shoot at it providing a great distraction for the other player.
  • Upon reading the writing on the ammo box of a Sentry Gun, one will notice that the writing says "600 Cartridges// 7.62 IW Sentry // Infinity = M1920", followed by a serial number.
  • To earn this killstreak's challenges (the ones earned by "calling in" a number of them), the player must use the actual killstreak. The player cannot earn them by obtaining the Sentry Gun through a Care Package or Emergency Airdrop.
  • The barrels do not spin in Multiplayer, even when firing.
  • If holding a Sentry Gun when an EMP goes off, it can be put down and it will be completely unharmed.
  • The Sentry Gun fires red bullets like weapons attached with FMJ.
  • In the mission "Endgame", if using noclip, it is possible to see three unusable Sentry Guns. They are not solid objects.

Call of Duty: Black Ops[]

  • It is possible for one to be killed by their own Sentry Gun. To do this, an enemy will have to be in front of the player when the Sentry Gun fires, resulting in it shooting at the player to get to the enemy.
  • When the Sentry Gun fires, the barrels don't spin. It just fires through a single barrel.
  • The targeting optic on the top of the gun appears to be the camera unit from the Camera Spike, without the tripod.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3[]

  • In Multiplayer, the Sentry Gun's turret moves downwards when destroyed; in Survival Mode, it turns upwards.
  • In Survival Mode, if the player dies while there is an enemy chopper in the air, any surviving Sentry Guns can continue shooting and eventually destroy the helicopter, even though the player has died. This is because the player dying simply freezes all enemy AI, and the game is not actually "over", just at a standstill.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II[]

  • Prior to the release of the game, a Sentry Gun was spotted for a brief moment on a computer being designed by Treyarch in the Behind the Scenes Preview trailer.
  • A label on the side says, Peacemaker V-32, along with an illegible date, serial number and code.
  • The sentry gun is not an actual solid object as players can go right through it.
  • In Black Ops II the Sentry Gun can be seen spinning its barrel while shooting.
