"The Keeper's skull may eviscerate our enemies, but the secrets it illuminates - THAT is what concerns me."
— Edward Richtofen upon taking the Skull of Nan Sapwe.

The Skull of Nan Sapwe is a Wonder Weapon featured in the Call of Duty: Black Ops III Zombies map Zetsubou No Shima.

This weapon has two attacks:

  1. Vaporize: it raises zombies in the air before obliterating them, causing them to emit bright light. This attack is especially useful for easily completing Trial of the Ancients trial that requires killing a Thrasher before it becomes enraged. Note that Thrashers are not as immediately killed this way as normal zombies.
  2. Mesmerize: it makes any aggressive zombie, Spider or Thrasher docile within the field of view of the Skull. Also used to reveal hidden objects and effects around the map and is required for the Easter Egg, Seeds of Doubt.

In the map Revelations, the Skull of Nan Sapwe reappears as a part of the Summoning Altar for the Keeper Protector and can be found in the Verrückt fragment of the map.

Obtaining[]

The Skull itself is housed in a hidden altar accessed by "cleansing" the four bloody skulls found on the Trials of the Ancients altar. Each skull has a symbol on the cleansing pedestal it is placed on along with being etched into the frontal lobe. One skull can be taken at a time to the matching cleaning pedestal to cleanse, but this is not limited to 1 cleansing per round. The symbols on each cleansing pedestal are randomized among the 4 locations every game.

The cleansing pedestals are found at:

  • In-front of the map spawning location, next to the large central rock before heading up to the Gobblegum Machine.
  • By the Propeller Trap, closest to the bottom-most switch for it.
  • In the Bunker, by the Docks to the left of the main Power Switch, center of the area around wooden crates.
  • In the Bunker Operation Room area, downstairs next to the KT-4 and Masamune tables.

Placing a skull within the correct pedestal will start a defend wave where zombies spawn in with a green glow around them which will go after the skull. All enemies left over when a cleansing is completed or failed will automatically be killed.

  • The first skull cleansing has only standard zombies, the second and fourth have Spiders, while the third and fourth will not always but can also include Thrashers.
  • Spiders and Thrashers only attack the player, and never go after the cleansing pedestal. Standard zombies will attack the player if they stand in directly in their path, but otherwise exclusively go after the cleansing pedestal.
  • It is not required to kill any enemies spawned during these cleansings, but it is recommended to at least kill the standard zombies attacking the pedestals to prevent failing the cleansing, and then if in danger, the Spiders and Thrashers going after players.
  • All enemies spawned by these cleansings do not give players any Points, and do not count towards the round total, so saving the last zombie of a round is a viable strategy to prevent being overrun.
  • If successful, all players gain 500 Points and the skull can now be retrieved from the pedestal to bring back to the main altar.
  • If the skull takes too much damage in this time, it will be destroyed and return to the main altar where all 4 skulls are initially on the next round.

After each skull has been cleansed and returned to the altar, a new staircase will unlock in front of the altar itself from where the fallen tree was. Inside this area is the Skull of Nan Sapwe sitting uncharged on a pedestal. Attempting to pick it up will cause the room to lock and Keepers will start to spawn, going after the skull.

Unlike the prior cleansing defenses, Keepers must be killed to charge the Skull and to end the defense, with completion re-opening the exit and allowing the Skull of Nan Sapwe to be picked up and utilized. Any active zombies outside the ritual area will be rendered docile while this is underway. When playing solo, a total of 20 Keepers must be killed to charge the skull.

Mesmerize Uses[]

As the Mesmerize can be utilized to locate and activate hidden objects in the world, it is key for:

  • Accessing the elevator machinery for Seeds of Doubt. First, Mesmerize the torn Blueprint on the wall in the Living Quarters, in the small corner room with the purple water. Next, Use Mesmerize on the rusted door to the left of the Elevator.
  • Upgrading the KT-4 to the Masamune. After the Blueprint is Mesmerized in Living Quarters, a stone wall can be Mesmerized directly next to where the first plant found deep underwater was found. Look to the right of where the original plant was and Mesmerize the wall.
  • Locating the unique red mist spider for the Spider Bait. All Trials for every player must be completed in advance in order to obtain, however.
  • Obtaining the Golden Bucket. It will move vines underneath Lab B. This only works after at least one of each plant is grown using the correct water types.

It is important to note that sometimes, when Mesmerizing the above special interactive objects, the Skull of Nan Sapwe consumes far more energy, taking approximately 30 energy to Mesmerize the moment something is revealed, instead of only the natural drain while held. This is not in particular to any objects revealed with Mesmerize, and occurs inconsistently.

Trivia[]

  • Inside the area in which the Skull of Nan Sapwe can be obtained, the player can reveal secret storyline information about the Keepers using the mesmerize attack. Doing so will prevent the Skull of Nan Sapwe's ammunition from being reduced without using it.
    • Through translation of the Keeper runes, it seems to tell the story of a Keeper who arrived on Pohnpei, protecting the island and its people. At some point, an evil "rose", or arrived at the island, forcing the Keeper to sacrifice himself, using his Skull to protect the island. His skull would then be sealed away.
