"With our superior strength in numbers and our boundless courage, victory is ours! We shall stop the fascist invaders there - at Stalingrad!"
— A Soviet commissar during the Volga crossing.

Stalingrad is the fifteenth campaign mission in Call of Duty and Call of Duty: Classic, and the first of the Soviet campaign. Caught between the Germans to their front and the commissars behind them, the 13th Guards Rifle Division must retake the Stalingrad docks.

Plot[]

A year after the German invasion of the Soviet Union, the Red Army's final hope of defense is the city of Stalingrad on the banks of the Volga River. While Soviet forces battle for the city, Joseph Stalin has issued Order #227, branding all who retreat without orders as traitors to the Soviet Union. The Red Army's political commissars are authorized to shoot them on the spot.

Corporal Alexei Voronin and a group of Red Army conscripts cross the Volga River by boat while a commissar reads the order of the day. They are to fight a glorious battle against the fascist invader, killing ten for each man they lose, and will enjoy plentiful supplies while the Germans run low on theirs. Defeatists, cowards, and traitors will be shot on the spot. With strength in numbers and spirit, the Red Army will be victorious.

A German artillery shell blows up one of the boats. German Junkers Ju 87 "Stuka" dive bombers begin strafing the Soviet flotilla, killing many conscripts. Believing the boat to be a death trap, many conscripts attempt to jump into the water. Those who succeed are gunned down by the commissars. Upon reaching the docks, the conscripts are ordered off the boat just before a German shell blows it up, knocking Voronin off his feet. He enters a queue where Soviet soldiers are given either a rifle or a clip of ammunition. Given a clip, he moves up the slope of the hill where poorly-armed conscripts are mown down by German MG42 gunners on the top of the hill. A Soviet officer makes a panicked appeal for artillery support through a radio, saying that the Germans are about to take the docks.

Voronin takes cover behind a stone wall with Sergeant Borodin, a sniper. Borodin orders him to act as bait for the gunners to allow him to take them out. Voronin runs for a truck just as the gunners reload, and Borodin kills one. Voronin makes a dash for an overturned car as the gunners change barrels, allowing Borodin to shoot another. Borodin orders him to take cover in a house, and shoots a commissar about to kill Voronin for falling back. Rendezvousing with a radioman, Borodin tells him he is nearly out of ammunition and that the battle will be lost without artillery support. The radioman finally secures support, and launches a barrage from across the river. The artillery shells pulverize the German line, allowing the Soviets to advance up the hill for the counterattack on Red Square.
