For the similar perk, see Tac Resist.

Tactical Mask is a Tier 3 perk featured in Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Call of Duty: Black Ops III and a Tier 1 perk in Call of Duty Online, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Call of Duty: Mobile and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and a Gear in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. In Call of Duty: Black Ops it is one of the three perks in the game that is unlocked by default. It is roughly equivalent to a combination of the Gas Mask and Shades perks of Call of Duty: World at War.

Call of Duty: Black Ops[]

Overview[]

Tactical Mask is unlocked by default, with the player not needing to purchase the perk. Tactical Mask renders the player immune to the effects of Nova Gas. Players can only be damaged by Nova Gas if the player gets hit by the grenade directly. However, players with Tactical Mask will still make loud in-game comments warning about the presence of gas, which can give away the player's position in some cases. This immunity also applies to the player's own Nova Gas, as well as friendly Nova Gas in Hardcore game types.

The perk's Pro version reduces the effects of Flashbangs and Concussion Grenades on the player by 90%. This is to say that if hit by a Flashbang, the player's vision will dim for a second before returning to normal. If hit by a Concussion Grenade, the player's vision will blur as if stunned, and movement and turning speed will be momentarily affected. This lasts for about two seconds before the player's vision returned to normal. This also applies to the player's own Flashbang and Concussion grenades, in addition to friendly Flashbang and Concussion grenades in Hardcore game types. Unlike in later games, enemy players are not notified if the person they just stunned has Tactical Mask Pro. This can often lead to the enemy making an ill-advised aggressive push under the false pretense that the Tactical Mask Pro user is more badly disoriented than they truly are.

The Pro version also reveals the general direction of any enemies that are hit with the player's Flashbangs or Concussion Grenades via a small yellow directional indicator near the cross-hair. If multiple enemies are stunned or blinded by the player's tactical grenades, multiple arrows will show up on his cross-hair. The direction of the indicator will change so as to always give the accurate direction with regards to what direction the player is currently facing. Ghost Pro users will not give off an indicator. The added yellow indicators also have an unintentional effect in that it can help the player determine nearby equipment, as getting a successful hit on something like a Claymore or a Motion Sensor will not give a direction indicator, but still give a Hitmarker.

Pro Challenges[]

  • Flash Kills — Kill 20 enemies that are blinded by the player's Flashbang.
  • Concussion Kills — Kill 20 enemies that are stunned by the player's Concussion Grenade.
  • Nova Gas Kills — Kill 20 enemies poisoned by the player's Nova Gas.
