The popular modification for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, alterIWNet, received a cease and desist letter from a law firm representing Activision yesterday, after being active for almost two years.

After Infinity Ward's decision to omit dedicated servers from the PC version of Modern Warfare 2, an initially small modding community set out to find a work-around. A few months after release, alterIWNet was made public, allowing players to access features they would normally be able to use on dedicated servers.

Two new multiplayer maps had been planned with the mod's next iteration, which would have seen the addition of The Gulag and the oil rig from "The Only Easy Day... Was Yesterday".

The mod's development team stated that alterIWNet would be shutdown "indefinitely" by the end of this week, and that they were in legal "negotiations" regarding possible copyright infringement with the Call of Duty publisher.
