It's supposed to be the cheap and safe way for internet-based companies to outsource data.

But Amazon's much-vaunted cloud network took a big hit yesterday when it crashed, taking a host of web 2.0 companies - including Reddit, Quora, and Hootsuite - down with it.

The rare phenomenon came on the same day as the massive PlayStation network went offline after an unexplained outage, which officials say could take another day or two to put right.
