Dimitri's Death

You all know Dimitri Petrenko from World At War. There is one thing I want to discuss: was he really killed in Black Ops? When you think about it, Reznov told Mason his story after the prison break mission. However, he was never there. Is the story really canon? I don't know, it confuses me.
