The Vepr is a bullpup submachine gun that appears in Call of Duty: Ghosts and Call of Duty Online.

Call of Duty: Ghosts[]

"Fully automatic. Largest ammo capacity in its class with low recoil."
— Description

Campaign[]

The Vepr is encountered several times in the campaign, including the mission Clockwork.

Multiplayer[]

The Vepr costs 8 Squad Points to unlock.

The Vepr is a consistent damage, moderate-range SMG. At any range short of 12.5 meters, the Vepr will deal 35 damage per bullet, needing three shots to kill. Damage decreases linearly until 26.4 meters. At any range beyond 26.4 meters, the Vepr will deal twenty damage per bullet, needing five shots to kill. The Vepr has a three shot kill range of 13.4 meters, and a four shot kill range of 21.8 meters. The Vepr in Hardcore has a one shot kill range of roughly fifteen meters. The Vepr deals fifty percent extra damage on headshots, reducing the number of shots needed to kill by one in many situations, especially if two headshots are acquired. Overall, while damage and range are not weak points on the Vepr, they are not defining aspects of the Vepr either. The Vepr has low penetration power.

The Vepr's rate of fire is average, firing at 869 RPM. This fire rate is neither good nor bad.

The Vepr's accuracy characteristics are unorthodox and a bit on the poor end for an SMG. The Vepr's iron sights are very clean and easy to use, eliminating the need for any optical attachments. The recoil per shot is fairly soft. The Vepr has recoil values of 55 upwards, 30 downwards, and 40 to the left and right. The Vepr has some of the lowest horizontal recoil of all SMGs, which is quite a desirable trait. However, the Vepr is saddled with the worst centerspeed of any SMG, at just 1000. Although the recoil per shot is not bad, 1000 centerspeed is terrible, and the Vepr struggles to counteract its own recoil as a result of the centerspeed being so poor. Worse, the Vepr's recoil characteristics mean that the Grip can't fix the Vepr's inaccuracy that much, since it doesn't modify centerspeed, only recoil values. No matter what, the Vepr is a weapon that struggles to control itself through sustained fire, and players will have to counteract its recoil more often than with other SMGs.

The Vepr's handling characteristics are great for an SMG. The Vepr allows users to move at 100% of the base movement speed, and strafe at 80% of the base movement speed. The Vepr aims down the sights in 200 milliseconds, and has good hip-fire accuracy. A very noteworthy trait of the Vepr is that it has the best sprint out time of any primary or secondary weapon, transitioning from sprinting to firing in just 111 milliseconds. This makes the Vepr highly suitable to aggressive playstyles, as the Vepr will more quickly place the user in a position to start firing than other SMGs. The Vepr's reload speeds are also decent for an SMG. The Vepr's reload animation is 2.96 seconds long, or 3.7 seconds long if the magazine is completely empty. In either case, the user can Reload Cancel the Vepr after 1.7 seconds. Reload speeds are bog standard for the Vepr.

The Vepr's biggest strength is its magazine capacity. It has the largest magazine capacity of any SMG, holding 42 rounds. This grants the largest starting ammo loadout in its class of 126 rounds. Although a nice advantage to have, the Vepr's magazine capacity advantage is greatly overstated, as most SMGs have slightly above average magazine capacities, and the Vepr's magazine isn't much bigger than the likes of the MTAR-X and the Bizon. Worse, the Vepr's magazine capacity advantage is less pronounced compared to low capacity SMGs, as even the lowest capacity SMGs hold at least 32 rounds per magazine.

The Vepr has the standard assortment of attachments on offer. As previously mentioned, the iron sights of the Vepr are fantastic, and leaves little to no reason to use optical attachments.

The Flash Suppressor will highly reduce muzzle flash. The attachment's benefit is purely visual, and minor in effect, making it rather pointless. The Silencer will reduce muzzle flash, reduce the noise made when firing the Vepr, and it will prevent the Vepr from revealing the player's position on map when firing the Vepr, at the expense of 25% of the Vepr's range benchmarks. Seeing that the Vepr never needs more than five shots to kill and that range was never the Vepr's strongest point, it's not a bad idea to silence the Vepr. On the other hand, the Muzzle Brake will boost the Vepr's range by 20%, allowing the user to secure more three and four shot kills. It is never a bad idea to use the Muzzle Brake on the Vepr.

The Grip will reduce the Vepr's recoil values by ten percent. Although purely beneficial, the Vepr's accuracy characteristics make the Grip not the most useful attachment on the Vepr, since the gun's main accuracy weakness lies in its centerspeed. Still, it never hurts to use the Grip.

Armor-Piercing will allow the Vepr to deal much more damage to enemies using Ballistic Vests and Juggernaut armor, essentially ignoring their armor effects. The attachment is quite situational, but never hurts to use. Rapid Fire takes full advantage of the Vepr's larger magazines, increasing the fire rate to 1034 RPM. This will allow the Vepr to kill enemies much more quickly, although it comes at the cost of accuracy. Not only will the Vepr's fire rate make accuracy worse, but recoil values will be made 5% larger. Extended Mags has a large numerical benefit of the Vepr and puts the Vepr's magazine advantage to good use, increasing the Vepr's magazines to 63 rounds each, allowing for a starting ammo loadout of 189 rounds, largely negating the need for ammo-boosting perks.

Overall, the Vepr is an SMG that overly relies on its magazine capacity advantage to be effective. Although the sprint out advantage it has can be useful, it's an advantage that is lost on many that use it. The Vepr does not have the per-shot power, rate of fire, or accuracy to stand out compared to its rivals, and instead relies on having extra bullets to win gunfights. These extra bullets make the Vepr among the best users of modification attachments in the SMG category.

The Vepr was buffed on the April 3rd patch, along with most other SMGs, to make it a more competitive weapon. It received a 32% increase in its minimum damage range, meaning its damage will not drop off as quickly as it did before, making it much more viable at longer ranges.

As well, the Vepr was buffed in the fact that the sprint out times were decreased significantly, making it ready to shoot after sprinting in 0.12 seconds, faster than any other weapon in the game besides the Minigun. When combined with Ready Up, the Sprint Out time is near instant being 0.072 seconds. This allows players to gain a huge advantage in close quarters over other SMGs such as the Bizon or CBJ-MS.

Extinction[]

The Vepr appears in Extinction on Point of Contact and Nightfall, costing $1500 in both maps.

Unfortunately, the Vepr only has a 32 round magazine, effectively killing the niche of using it over other SMGs, such as the Bizon, CBJ-MS, or MTAR-X, as they have a larger magazine size than the Vepr in Extinction, with the CBJ-MS being equal in capacity to the Vepr. Thankfully, the Vepr still provides great handling characteristics and a good reload speed, making the Vepr quite favorable for those that aren't running Weapon Specialist and/or Team Booster since the Vepr will still handle admirably in the hands of a soldier lacking both of these things.

Locations[]

  • Point of Contact: Next to the first Barrier Hive, leaning against some boxes.
  • Nightfall: Leaning near the base of a radio tower in the compound area. Located near a piece of intel on top of a structure in the facility area.

Safeguard[]

The Vepr appears in Safeguard, and is obtained from Support Drops. It comes with a Grip.

Compared to the other SMG in this game mode, the MTAR-X, it outclasses it due to its higher magazine capacity and its other statistics being generally the same as the MTAR-X's.
